DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe objective of this study is to provide the background required for an understanding of the boundary dispute between Ecuador and Peru, a hardy perennial among inter-American controversies. It is not designed to propound any particular thesis, much less to take sides in the dispute. Evaluation of the significance of the positions adopted by the parties over the years have been included. Primary attention has been focused on the period after the entry into effect of the Rio Protocol of 1942 which attempted to fix the boundary between the rival states and which was guaranteed by Argentina, Brazil, Chile and the United States. Very little has previously been published on the efforts of the guarantors to work out the problems which arose in the execution of the protocol. These problems proved so intractable that the demarcation of the boundary has not yet been completed, leaving the guarantors with a residual responsibility which they may yet be called upon to discharge. In addition to the survey of the post-1942 period, it was considered desirable to include information regarding the origins of the dispute and earlier attempts at solutions. Much of this material will be appearing for the first time in English.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKA militarized interstate dispute (MID) refers to international conflict short of war. The MID dataset from the Correlates of War Project catalogs summary data on all threats, displays, and uses of force between two or more states. These dispute data are essential in quantitative analyses of international conflict and other issues, such as diplomatic efforts and security policy. The problem however is that they offer little information barring a brief summary of the conflict event. This work remedies it by providing original, detailed narrative descriptions of what occurred in each case. Organized by rivalry and within geographic regions, these case descriptions, written specifically for this work, will be an essential resource for those interested in the causes, histories, and consequences of international conflicts.

DOWNLOAD EBOOK"Badly needed updated history of Peruvian-US relations from the series edited by Lester Langley on Latin American-US relations. Traces evolution of diplomatic, military and economic relations between the two nations from independence to late in second term of Fujimori presidency. Emphasizes dominant economic impact of such corporate giants as Cerro de Pasco, Grace, and the International Petroleum Company. Especially interesting and innovative sections of the study are discussions of 'company towns,' the Cornell University Vicos agrarian project (begun in the early 1950s), and the folksy critique of the Fujimori government's drug policy. Offers a highly useful bibliographical essay that will be helpful to both specialist and student alike, in which pertinent web sites are included. Well-suited for classroom use"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThroughout history, the functions and roles of borders have been continuously changing. They can only be understood in their context, shaped as they are by history, politics and power, as well as cultural and social issues. Borders are therefore complex spatial and social phenomena which are not static or invariable, but which are instead highly dynamic. This comprehensive volume brings together a multidisciplinary team of leading scholars to provide an authoritative, state-of-the-art review of all aspects of borders and border research. It is truly global in scope and, besides embracing the more traditional strands of the field including geopolitics, migration and territorial identities, it also takes in recently emerging topics such as the role of borders in a seemingly borderless world; creating neighbourhoods, and border enforcement in the post-9/11 era.
