DOWNLOAD EBOOKWilliam Beckford’s Vathek is a touchstone of eighteenth-century Orientalism and of the Gothic novel. Beckford’s later work, The Episodes of Vathek, shares Vathek’s irreverent and decadent style, and an edition that unites the two has long been overdue. The Broadview edition includes a newly discovered early version of the first episode, never before in print, that centres on male-male love, as well as the previously published version that was re-written by Beckford as a heterosexual narrative. Based on the 1823 edition—the last one edited by the author himself—the Broadview Edition also introduces The Episodes in the order Beckford planned, and incorporates his final corrections.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKCrossing borders - both physically and imaginatively - is part of our 'nomadic' postmodern identity, but transcultural and transnational exchanges have also played a major role in the centuries-long processes of hybridisation that helped to fashion the vast geographic, political and imaginative container of diversity we call Europe. This volume gathers together the work of scholars from several European countries in an attempt to encourage a collective reflection upon historical - and often 'mythical' - locations and landscapes, as well as upon the thresholds and faultlines that unite or separate them. The issues the volume tackles are delicate and complex, for the encounter of differences engenders both curiosity and suspicion and there is no easy way to create a new synthesis while respecting and promoting diversity. However, since Europe is inevitably a cultural and political entity 'in the making', Europeans should embrace the 'great narrative' of a 'utopian project', uniting their efforts to work towards a civilisation that is grounded on plurality and openness.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKTraditionally Hellenism is seen as the uncontroversial and beneficial influence of Greece upon later culture. Drawing upon new ideas from culture and gender theory, Jennifer Wallace rethinks the nature of classical influence and finds that the relationship between the modern west and Greece is one of anxiety, fascination and resistance. Shelley's protean and radical writing questions and illuminates the contemporary Romantic understanding of Greece. This book will appeal to students of Romantic Literature, as well as to those interested in the classical tradition.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKOrientalism and Literature discusses a key critical concept in literary studies and how it assists our reading of literature. It reviews the concept's evolution: how it has been explored, imagined and narrated in literature. Part I considers Orientalism's origins and its geographical and multidisciplinary scope, then considers the major genres and trends Orientalism inspired in the literary-critical field such as the eighteenth-century Oriental tale, reading the Bible, and Victorian Oriental fiction. Part II recaptures specific aspects of Edward Said's Orientalism: the multidisciplinary contexts and scholarly discussions it has inspired (such as colonial discourse, race, resistance, feminism and travel writing). Part III deliberates upon recent and possible future applications of Orientalism, probing its currency and effectiveness in the twenty-first century, the role it has played and continues to play in the operation of power, and how in new forms, neo-Orientalism and Islamophobia, it feeds into various genres, from migrant writing to journalism.
