What is play? Why do we play? What can play teach us about our life as social beings? In this critical investigation into the significance of play, Henning Eichberg argues that through play we can ask questions about the world, others and ourselves. Playing a game and asking a question are two forms of human practice that are fundamentally connected. This book presents a practice-based philosophical approach to understanding play that begins with empirical study, drawing on historical, sociological and anthropological investigations of play in the real world, from contemporary Danish soccer to war games and folk dances. Its ten chapters explore topics such as: play as a practice of search playing, learning and progress the light and dark sides of play playing games, sport and display folk sports, popular games, and social identity play under the conditions of alienation. From these explorations emerge a phenomenological approach to understanding play and its value in interrogating ourselves and our social worlds. This book offers a challenging contribution to the interdisciplinary field of the philosophy of play. It will be fascinating reading for any student or researcher interested in social and cultural anthropology, phenomenology, and critical sociology as well as the ethics and philosophy of sport, leisure studies, and the sociology of sport. .

Solve design, planning, and control problems using modern AI techniques. Optimization problems are everywhere in daily life. What’s the fastest route from one place to another? How do you calculate the optimal price for a product? How should you plant crops, allocate resources, and schedule surgeries? Optimization Algorithms introduces the AI algorithms that can solve these complex and poorly-structured problems. In Optimization Algorithms: AI techniques for design, planning, and control problems you will learn: • The core concepts of search and optimization • Deterministic and stochastic optimization techniques • Graph search algorithms • Trajectory-based optimization algorithms • Evolutionary computing algorithms • Swarm intelligence algorithms • Machine learning methods for search and optimization problems • Efficient trade-offs between search space exploration and exploitation • State-of-the-art Python libraries for search and optimization Inside this comprehensive guide, you’ll find a wide range of optimization methods, from deterministic search algorithms to stochastic derivative-free metaheuristic algorithms and machine learning methods. Don’t worry—there’s no complex mathematical notation. You’ll learn through in-depth case studies that cut through academic complexity to demonstrate how each algorithm works in the real world. Plus, get hands-on experience with practical exercises to optimize and scale the performance of each algorithm. About the technology Every time you call for a rideshare, order food delivery, book a flight, or schedule a hospital appointment, an algorithm works behind the scenes to find the optimal result. Blending modern AI methods with classical search and optimization techniques can deliver incredible results, especially for the messy problems you encounter in the real world. This book shows you how. About the book Optimization Algorithms explains in clear language how optimization algorithms work and what you can do with them. This engaging book goes beyond toy examples, presenting detailed scenarios that use actual industry data and cutting-edge AI techniques. You will learn how to apply modern optimization algorithms to real-world problems like pricing products, matching supply with demand, balancing assembly lines, tuning parameters, coordinating mobile networks, and cracking smart mobility challenges. What's inside • Graph search algorithms • Metaheuristic algorithms • Machine learning methods • State-of-the-art Python libraries for optimization • Efficient trade-offs between search space exploration and exploitation About the reader Requires intermediate Python and machine learning skills. About the author Dr. Alaa Khamis is an AI and smart mobility technical leader at General Motors and a lecturer at the University of Toronto. The technical editor on this book was Frances Buontempo. Ruby Stanhope is back, bigger and better than ever! - with more cocktail spills, more romantic thrills, more political skewerings and LOLs. In Campaign Ruby, the very fabulous Ruby Stanhope got the Leader of the Opposition elected and fell in love with Luke. Two years into his first term, the new PM is on the nose. And Luke is demanding romantic dinners at home rather than takeaway on the run. What's a girl to do when she's about to turn thirty, when her wardrobe turns drab, her love life turns luke-warm and the government is leakier than a cheap umbrella? Can she find her inner Nancy Drew in time to save her boss? Will she succumb to temptation when Elliot, the hot vet, enters the scene? Luke? Elliot? Work? Love? Unladdered stockings? Can she have it all? And, more importantly, what should she wear to the Midwinter Ball? Jessica Rudd, 28, had three career changes in as many years - law, PR, politics - but is now going steady with her life as a writer. She hopes Ruby Blues, sequel to Campaign Ruby, will give her readers as many laughs as she had writing it. Jessica is based in Beijing. 'A light-hearted, skilfully written political romp...the Gen Y comedy of manners par excellence.' Age 'Ruby Blues is a delight to read. Beyond the laughs, it contains some serious messages for us (about our priorities) and for our leaders (about being themselves rather than just spouting predictable talking points). Will someone please buy the PM a copy?' Canberra Times 'Fresh funny and smart. Loved it.' Mia Freedman, West Australian magazine 'Ruby Blues should serve to establish Jessica as an author of thoroughly fun and thoroughly female books. Ruby Blues is like The West Wing meets Marian Keyes: fast-talking through the corridors of power blended with putting-make- up-on-in-a-bike-taxi drama and work-life-balance calamity.' Sunday Mail Brisbane 'Rudd is a natural storyteller, one whose narrative and character construction reveal an underlying intelligence. There is substance behind the easy writing style.' Weekend Australian 'Ruby Blues is Allison Pearson (I Don’t Know Show She Does It) with parliament...Rudd should really have written At Home with Julia - she would have done a better job.' Sunday Age 'Ruby Blues is one of the best novels I've read this year. Easy to read, hard to put down, it has everything Campaign Ruby had plus more, namely a hunky veterinarian...Rudd's writing is witty, modern and on-trend with her target audience. If you love politics, chick lit, fashion and twitter, then this book is for you.' Examiner 'For politically savvy Gen-Y chick lit, you can't go past [Jessica Rudd]...It's a savvy and entertaining read.' Saturday Age 'Laugh-out-loud moments abound: the scrapes, foibles and follies are hilarious: and the bitchiness is biting. Someone, please, grab the film rights.' Good Reading 'Hilarious, clever and sharp - this is one of my favourite books of 2011.' Sunday Star Times
Welcome to this mind-boggling collection of 50 fantastic 25 x 25 sudoku puzzles. 25 x 25 sudoku puzzles work just the same as regular 9 x 9 sudoku puzzles, but they are, well, a lot bigger! Infact whereas a normal sudoku has 81 squares in it, a 25x25 sudoku has 625 squares in it, so you get a lot more puzzle for your money. If you like giant sudoku, and enjoy the satisfaction of solving a puzzle that takes a lot longer to complete than a regular sudoku, then you won't get much bigger than 25 x 25 sudoku puzzles. The puzzles are displayed one puzzle per page at a generous page size 8.5" x 11" (21.59 x 27.94 cm). Therefore there is sufficient space for you to work through the puzzles and be able to enter pencilmarks in the grid. The givens are distributed symmetrically in each of the 50 puzzles, and each puzzle has one unique solution that can be reached through the use of logical rules alone - there's never any need to guess. To solve then just place the numbers from 1 - 25 once in each row, column and 5x5 box.
