A two-step method is presented for the determination of reliable approximations of the probability density function of the forced response of a randomly mistuned bladed disk. Under the assumption of linearity, an integral representation of the probability density function of the blade amplitude is first derived. Then, deterministic perturbation techniques are employed to produce simple approximations of this function. The adequacy of the method is assessed by comparing several approximate solutions with simulation results.

FMM is a reduced order model for efficiently calculating the forced response of a mistuned bladed disk. FMM ID is a companion program which determines the mistuning in a particular rotor. Together, these methods provide a way to acquire data on the mistuning in a population of bladed disks, and then simulate the forced response of the fleet. This process is tested experimentally, and the simulated results are compared with laboratory measurements of a fleet of test rotors. The method is shown to work quite well. It is found that accuracy of the results depends on two factors: the quality of the statistical model used to characterize mistuning, and how sensitive the system is to errors in the statistical modeling. This is the first comprehensive volume on nearly periodic structures and mistuned blade vibration. Alok Sinha presents fundamental concepts and state-of-the-art techniques in the analysis of free and forced response of a nearly periodic structure, weaving together his own work (covering thirty-five years of research in this field) with works by other researchers. He also discusses similarities between tools used in bladed rotor analysis and condensed matter physics. Specific subjects covered include the reasons behind mode localization, the reasons behind amplitude amplification of steady-state response, state-of-the-art computational techniques for mistuned bladed rotors including multistage rotors, identification of mistuning from measured response, vibration localization in linear atomic chains, and analysis of two-dimensional periodic structures.

Rotor dynamics is an important branch of dynamics that deals with behavior of rotating machines ranging from very large systems like power plant rotors, for example, a turbogenerator, to very small systems like a tiny dentist’s drill, with a variety of rotors such as pumps, compressors, steam/gas turbines, motors, turbopumps etc. as used for example in process industry, falling in between. The speeds of these rotors vary in a large range, from a few hundred RPM to more than a hundred thousand RPM. Complex systems of rotating shafts depending upon their specific requirements, are supported on different types of bearings. There are rolling element bearings, various kinds of fluid film bearings, foil and gas bearings, magnetic bearings, to name but a few. The present day rotors are much lighter, handle a large amount of energy and fluid mass, operate at much higher speeds, and therefore are most susceptible to vibration and instability problems. This have given rise to several interesting physical phenomena, some of which are fairly well understood today, while some are still the subject of continued investigation. Research in rotor dynamics started more than one hundred years ago. The progress of the research in the early years was slow. However, with the availability of larger computing power and versatile measurement technologies, research in all aspects of rotor dynamics has accelerated over the past decades. The demand from industry for light weight, high performance and reliable rotor-bearing systems is the driving force for research, and new developments in the field of rotor dynamics. The symposium proceedings contain papers on various important aspects of rotor dynamics such as, modeling, analytical, computational and experimental methods, developments in bearings, dampers, seals including magnetic bearings, rub, impact and foundation effects, turbomachine blades, active and passive vibration control strategies including control of instabilities, nonlinear and parametric effects, fault diagnostics and condition monitoring, and cracked rotors. This volume is of immense value to teachers, researchers in educational institutes, scientists, researchers in R&D laboratories and practising engineers in industry.

This book presents the papers from the 10th International Conference on Vibrations in Rotating Machinery. This conference, first held in 1976, has defined and redefined the state-of-the-art in the many aspects of vibration encountered in rotating machinery. Distinguished by an excellent mix of industrial and academic participation achieved, these papers present the latest methods of theoretical, experimental and computational rotordynamics, alongside the current issues of concern in the further development of rotating machines. Topics are aimed at propelling forward the standards of excellence in the design and operation of rotating machines. - Presents latest methods of theoretical, experimental and computational rotordynamics - Covers current issues of concern in the further development of rotating machines
