This monograph presents a detailed review of the systematics of the species complex of Amazonian frogs Hypsiboas calcaratus – H. fasciatus. These frogs have a wide distribution in the Amazon basin and are a prominent component of scientific collections in the region. The review includes a phylogeny based on genetic evidence and also an integrative analysis of genetics, morphology and bioacoustics to determine species limits. The analysis indicates the existence of 11 candidate species, a five-fold in-crease relative to the current taxonomy. Four of the candidate species are described as new species and one is resurrected from a previous synonymy. The review is thoroughly illustrated with high-quality images. Venomous Animals and Their Venoms, Volume II: Venomous Vertebrates is a collection of papers that describes the chemistry and biochemistry of snake, batrachian, and fish venoms. These papers discuss their pharmacological actions, their antigenic properties, and their medical aspects such as symptomatology and therapy. Papers describe the pharmacology and toxicology of the venoms of Asiatic, Australian, and Melanesian snakes including the cobra, the common Krait, the saw-scaled viper. One paper presents the pathology, symptomatology, treatment of snake bites in Australia, and the use of an antivenin schedule when the type of snake is not known. Some papers tackle the distribution of snakes in North America, and compare the biochemistry of Miliarius barbouri and Sistrurus catenatus which are subspecies of rattlesnakes. Other papers describe the biology and venom of the Arizona Gila monster and of the Mexican Gila monster. The basic substances in toad venom are from bases present in the glands, their secretions or on their skin. In treating stings from venomous fishes, one paper recommends the use of suction to remove the venom or soaking the injured part in hot water. This collection can be helpful for physicians, veterinarians, toxicologists, pharmacologists, chemists, and researchers in animal bites and injuries.

Marianne North, an unmarried middle-aged Victorian lady of comfortable means, set off in 1891 on her first expedition to make a pictorial record of the tropical and exotic plants of the world. She produced more than 800 paintings which are housed in a special gallery at Kew. Republished after 85 years thisfacsimile of the 6th edition of the Official Guide to the North Gallery remains an instructive publication to the unique collection of paintings by Marianne North and the gallery. The pictures, painted by North in-situ in the countries indicated and arranged by her in the gallery, have hung in the positions she allocated for them since 1882. The guide does not just dwell on the beauty of the paintings; it also relates the plants and landscapes painted to Kew, its great glasshouses and museums. One hundred and thirty seven years on, it is hard to improve on the praise lavished by the Gardener's Chronicle 'the skilful dashing works of a true artist, which completely succeeds in showing Nature as she is' and the words of Sir Joseph Hooker who saw the paintings as a record of plants 'already disappearing or shortly to disappear before the axe and forest fire'.
