At the height of Australia s 1970s recession, two young men leave home seeking fame and fortune. They travel through Queensland s outback looking for work and arrive in Mount Isa, near broke. The city takes them in and so begins the adventure of creating their lives in the remote, rough and tumble environment of one of Australia s biggest mining communities. Set in among the hot, dry and arid landscape of Queensland s Gulf Country, the two newcomers discover both the delights and difficulties of living far inland from their coastal origins. A variety of jobs take them to places that few people would have ever experienced, from prospecting deep in the bush to dark, damp mines located thousands of metres underground. Mates is a great story infused with warm Australian characteristics and humour. The region s great mining history, Aboriginal people and extraordinary bushland have all been thoroughly researched and richly described by author Stephen Outram.

Trevor Outram and his wife Molly immigrated to Australia with their two young children; their sea journey from England covered 20,000 km, took 28 days and landed them in Fremantle, Western Australia on January 22, 1965. They travelled a further 1,600 km north to the tiny town of Port Hedland, which was just beginning to boom exporting iron ore from the Pilbara region. There was no radio, television, fresh milk and limited fresh fruit and vegetables in Port Hedland; it was hot, dry, isolated and in complete contrast to the family's lush, green English origins. None of this was to stop the Outrams as they set-to forging a new life in Australia, knowing that there was little support and no one to fall back on. Their story is one of courage, endeavour and success; they are one of Australia's largely unknown but nevertheless intrepid, gutsy pioneers. The First Five Years is based on their story; a magnificent true story.

This book contributes to our growing understanding of the nature and development of language learner self-concept. It assesses the relevant literature in the disciplines of psychology and applied linguistics and describes in-depth, qualitative research examining the self-concepts of tertiary-level EFL learners. Although researchers in applied linguistics and SLA have recognized the importance of self-constructs, there remains little empirical work in the context of foreign language learning that focuses exclusively and at length on this central psychological construct. The content of this monograph draws on interdisciplinary sources, with input from psychology and applied linguistics. It will appeal to students and researchers interested in language-learner psychology as well as self-related constructs in general. The text provides insights into how learners view themselves, and how these self-beliefs can develop and affect the progress of an individual’s language learning.

This volume presents a systematic approach to developing advanced English language competence at tertiary level. It includes the reflections of experienced language teachers and teacher-researchers in the English Language Competence programme at the University of Vienna and provides examples of good practice, amalgamating teaching expertise and research with aspects of curriculum design and programme management. The book addresses a growing academic and professional interest in understanding advanced language learning and use. To date, research has tended to investigate advanced proficiency from a specific theoretical viewpoint, for example cognition, psycholinguistic processing strategies, or the assumption of a critical period or the age factor. In contrast, this work examines advanced proficiency from a curricular and instructional perspective by providing a profile of advanced-level language development in a specific institutional context. It brings together three areas of language education: curriculum design, pedagogical practice, and research. Within this triangle, advanced English language education is the focus or, conversely, advanced English language education provides the lens through which links between curriculum design, teaching, and research can be established.

Why, despite years of trying, have efforts to achieve lasting, effective school reform fallen short? What curricular and policy elements must be in place to move forward? How should the roles of teachers and education leaders be defined to best support the point of school? Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe answer these and other questions in Schooling by Design: Mission, Action, and Achievement. Building on the premise of Understanding by Design, their acclaimed framework for curriculum, instruction, and assessment, the authors present a compelling argument for using the same approach to reach a grand goal: the reform of schooling as a whole. In their view, reform rests on six pillars: * A relentless focus on the long-term mission of school: enabling learners to demonstrate understanding and mature habits of mind; * A curriculum and assessment framework that honors the mission and ensures that content "coverage" is no longer the accepted approach to instruction; * A set of principles of learning that support all decisions about pedagogy and planning; * Structures, policies, job descriptions, practices, and use of resources consistent with mission and learning principles; * An overall strategy that includes ongoing feedback and adjustment; and * A set of tactics linked to strategy, including a planning process that uses "backward design" to accomplish the key work of reform. Practical, insightful and provocative, Schooling by Design elaborates on each of these elements and presents educators with both the rationale and the methodology for closing the gap between what we say we want from school and what school actually delivers—for turning vision into reality.
