This study utilized single case study design to explore alumni giving at one medium-sized community college in the mid-Atlantic region. The purpose of this study was to assess the connection between the college and its alumni donors as it relates to the benefits of the educational experience (e.g., advantage, opportunity, and recognition) and alumni motivation to give to their community college. Mauss (1950/1990) and Brittingham and Pezzullo (1990) provided the theoretical framework of gift exchange theory, which suggests that a cyclical relationship would exist between alumni and the community college.

In this study, personal characteristics of young alumni, graduates of the last decade, were analyzed in order to better determine which alumni were more likely to be philanthropic at a small public liberal arts institution. Examination of personal characteristics (gender, age, alumni activity, marital status, proximity to campus, number of children, major, undergraduate involvement, and the involvement with a student philanthropic program) was measured against personal philanthropic institutional giving. This study determined which characteristics, of young alumni at the institution of interest, explained the positive relationship to the alumnus' probability to donate. Engagement strategies for this group were determined by identifying the most likely young alumni donor.

Alumni associations and offices of development play fundamental roles in American higher education, typically having missions which include the generation of financial support for the institution. Alumni associations must develop strategies to encourage alumni to donate money and enable them to build long-term relationships between alumni organizations and the university. The foundation of any fund raising program is the annual fund. Not only does the annual fund represent a significant percentage of funds raised for most charities, it often comes with the fewest strings attached. If development professionals have a clear understanding of the issues and factors that influence donors to make annual gifts, they may be able to design cultivation and solicitation approaches which raise more money at less cost. The study uses quantitative methods to analyze data collected from the computer database of the Mississippi State University Foundation and Mississippi State University National Alumni Association to develop a profile of donors and non-donors. Recommendations for further study include more studies of this type in the region, interview studies with donors, and studying any relationships between giving and other variables, such as income level.

Winner of the Association of Fundraising Professionals 2014 Skystone Partners Research Prize in Philanthropy and Fundraising Traditionally, institutions have relied on wealthy White men to reach their fundraising goals. But as state investment in public higher education lessens and institutions look to philanthropy to move from excellence to eminence, advancement officers continually need to engage all populations, including many that have historically been excluded from fundraising strategies. Based on theory, research, and past practice, Expanding the Donor Base in Higher Education explores how colleges and universities can build culturally sensitive fundraising and engagement strategies. This edited book presents emerging research on different communities that have not traditionally been approached for fundraising—including Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) alumni, African Americans, Latinos, graduate students, young alumni, women, and faculty donors. Chapters discuss and analyze successful programs and provide practical suggestions and strategies to create and implement fundraising programs that engage these new donor populations. Expanding the Donor Base in Higher Education is an essential resource for any institution looking to expand their pool of donors and cultivate a more philanthropic mindset among alumni and students.
