African-American and other minority children are bombarded by negative messages about themselves in the media, in the classroom, in society at large, and sadly even in their own homes. “They Said I Couldn’t, But Yes I Can” is a book that was written to convey hope in the dreams that can become reality. The author and illustrator mother and daughter duo, took inspiration from minority men and women who excelled against all odds in fields of Science, Journalism, Politics, Art, Music, Dance, Sports, Law, Aeronautics and much more. These individuals not only excelled, but broke the barriers to become the “first” or “only” to have achieved that honor. The book is written using poetry, humor, and a touch of the reality that our children live and must fight to overcome. The illustrations depict these people as children already working in their various fields as a nod to what they have become when they grew up. Minority children should have a copy of this book as a historical chronology and as a source of positive role models and heroes they can emulate. We encourage further personal research of the individuals highlighted in this book.

THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER A raw, honest, and revealing co-memoir by Brie and Nikki Bella: twin sisters, WWE Hall of Fame inductees, and stars of the hit E! shows Total Bellas and Total Divas. As twins, the Bellas have always competed. Legend has it that Nikki drop-kicked Brie in the womb so that she could make her grand entrance first. But the rest of the world often treated them as identical and even interchangeable, so they decided to do something about it. After they made it into WWE, the Bellas accomplished so much together: bringing in young girls and women while building the Bella Army, helping the transition of female performers from Divas to Superstars, starring in Total Divas and Total Bellas, and founding companies like Birdiebee, Nicole + Brizee Beauty, and Bonita Bonita Wine. Though their early journey began with loss, abuse, and plenty of rough times, these challenges “shined the diamond.” They resolved to be survivors and the heroes of their own stories, and to take control and responsibility for their lives. Eventually, they would come to show girls everywhere that they can do anything. The Bellas may be identical twins—but as individuals, they have proven themselves Incomparable.

I was almost as hard headed as it gets while repeatedly insisting on missing and ignoring the entire point that Mom and a few others tried to get me to realize. GET YOUR EDUCATION!!! I still had some great times here and there every now and then, and I can only imagine how beautiful-my-life-would-have-been if I would have followed the The Golden Rules. Some wonderful things have happened to me even though I still feel that I truly did not deserve or even know how to sincerely enjoy thoroughly, but on the other hand, some not so wonderful things have happened to me that I basically brought on myself as a direct result of not following The Golden Rules. EDUCATION IS A MUST!!! I know my family was not the only family that has gone through a divorce, and I know there are millions of kids who went through divorce without a scratch. I am not blaming any of my failures as a man on the pitfalls of divorce, but I can clearly see now that my character flaws were a direct hit stemming from the casualties of my parents divorce. I did not ask to be me, and I certainly did not ask or expect to be stuck on stupid for almost three tenths of a century. It was what it was! If I would have known their divorce would eventually effect me which I believe set the wheels in motion that turned towards me turning out the way I have, I would have started Praying that night. But I had no idea it would, and neither did they. I can only imagine how beautiful my life would have been if their marriage was meant to be, but it was not about me. Brooke!

Laura Sorento grew up in a home filled with lies and abuse. At a very young age, her mother had an affair with a divorced man named Bruce, who had three children. Shortly after that, her mom convinced her husband, Anthony, to buy a large home with Bruce and his children. Her mom had managed to pull off this twisted arrangement for almost ten years, ending with Laura being abused, humiliated, violated, and emotionally abandoned. Bruce was so abusive and her mother was so caught up with this love affair that she lost sight of everything. She became a totally different mother than Laura knew, and the home soon became a dysfunctional nightmare. Laura often would be chased into her closet, where Bruce would abuse her. While she lay in her closet crying, she would wonder why her mom never helped her. Her mom knew about all of it, but she would always find fault with Laura. She felt abandoned by her mom and afraid to tell her dad. Why did she allow this to go on? As Laura cried in her closet, she made promises to herself and to her future children that she hoped to have someday. She promised to love and protect them at any cost.
