Excerpt from The Life and Times of Oliver Goldsmith, Vol. 1 of 2 When this work first appeared, twenty-three years ago, it was made the subject of an attack by the author of a former Life of Goldsmith so unprovoked and inex ensable that even literary history affords hardly a parallel to it. I at once published a reply, to which no rejoinder was ever attempted; and all the subsequent editions of my book were prefaced by it. Sir James Prior is now dead, and I do not print it here. It is, however, necessary to retain some remark' on the principle involved in his com plaint. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Miscellaneous Works of Oliver Goldsmith, M. B, Vol. 1 of 6: To Which Is Prefixed, Some Account of His Life and Writings It was a tradition in our poet's family, that they were descended from a Spanish gentleman named Juan Romeiro, who had sometime in the Sixteenth century come into Ireland, with a Spanish noble man; to whom, with modern 1deas, they supposed him to have been tutor or guardian; and that 'set tling in Ireland, from a marriage with a wife of the name of Goldsmith, his descendants assumed1 her English name. Excerpt from The Works of Oliver Goldsmith, Vol. 2 of 5: A New Edition, Containing Pieces Hitherto Uncollected, and a Life of the Author Yet, however this art may be neglected by the powerful, it 18 still in greater danger from the mistaken efforts of the learned to improve it. What criticisms have we not heard of late in favour of blank verse and Pindaric odes, choruses, anapests and iambics, alliterative care and hap y negligence Every absurdity has now a champion to e fend it; and as he is generally much in the wrong, so he has always much to say for error is ever talkative. But there is an enemy to this art still more dangerous, - I mean party. Party entirely distorts the judgment, and destroys the taste. When the mind is once infected with this disease, it can only find pleasure in what contri butes to increase the distemper. Like the tiger, that sel dom desists from pursuing man after having once preyed upon human flesh, the reader, who has once gratified his a petite with calumny, makes ever after the most agree aele feast upon murdered reputation. Such readers gene rally admire some half-witted thing, who wants to be thought a bold man, having lost the character of a wise one. Him they dignify with the name of poet his tawdry' lampoons are called satires; his turbulence is said to be force, and his frenzy fire. What reception a poem may find, which has neither abuse, party, nor blank verse to support it, I cannot tell. Excerpt from The Works of Oliver Goldsmith, Vol. 5 of 5: A New Edition, Containing Pieces Hitherto Uncollected, and a Life of the Author; Prefaces and Introductions: Animated Nature (Extracts): Nobleman's Letters: Goody Two-Shoes: Index Sensible of this truth, it is not expected to enhance the excellencies or palliate the faults of the succeeding Memoir. The public will scarce be influenced in their judgment by an obscure prefacer; and perhaps the work might rather suffer by his misplaced admiration. To confess a truth, be hardly knows how to introduce it to the public attention, and even to procure it a reading, among the multiplicity of modern publications.
