Excerpt from The Why, When, and How of Revivals Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong - 1 Cor. Xvi, 13. Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For ye wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. - Eph. Vi, 11, 12. This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, dis obedient to parents, unthankful, unholy. - 2 Tim. Iii, I, 2. Excerpt from The Revival and After the Revival This is a world of "revivals." In the kingdoms of nature where there is life there is a law of revival. Though in autumn death comes to field and forest, with the next spring-time comes new life. Barren branches bear leaf and blossom again. The seed dropped into the soil dies, but dies that it may live in other seed-bearing forms. The robin's song ceases among the branches, but after the silence of winter with the buds come the birds. The fall of the year finds no bleating lamb in the meadow, but when the tender grass sprouts "the little white sheeplets" rest and rollic in it. Excerpt from Revivals and Revival Work The subject matter of this little volume was prepared originally as a new chapter for the authors work on Homiletics and Pastoral Theology, and, as here produced, was printed from plates made for that work. Owing to this fact, the form of its present appearance is different from what it otherwise would have been, and the foot notes, some of which refer to the preceding chapters of the larger work, necessarily appear in this volume. Of course, an exhaustive treatment of so important and broad a subject as that which forms our title would be impossible within the limits of so small a volume as this. Trusting, however, that, with all its imperfections, it will be found to contain some inspiring thoughts for devout readers, and some valuable hints and suggestions to those who aspire to be useful in winning souls, this unpretentious contribution to the literature of revivals is now commended to the Christian public by The Author. Excerpt from Revival and the Pastor The early Christian fathers abound in sim ilar representations, and almost rival the holy apostles in fervency of expostulation. At all times prior to the Reformation there were orders and individual ministers regarded as peculiarly qualified to arouse the Church and to awaken sinners. Excerpt from Revivals: Their Place and Their Power But with both these points freely conceded, we think it can still be made clear to demonstration that revivals of religion have their legitimate place as an important means of Christian nurture and conquest, that they are, there fore, not only not to be condemned and avoided, but to be counted among the things for which every pastor and every church should labor and pray. Excerpt from Getting Ready: For a Revival Great as are many of the mistakes made in the management of revival work, there is none, in my judgment, so general and disastrous as the neglect adequately to prepare for the coming special services, weeks, and even months in advance. The time was when preparation for a revival was impossible, for a preacher with from ten to forty appointments to serve could do little more than preach, holding a meeting here or there as the Spirit seemed to indicate. The rapid concentration of mind and heart possible to our simple minded fathers on account of the lack of other subjects of thought and feeling made preparation less necessary than it is now in this day of complex civilization with its unnumbered distracting elements. What was once a simple problem has become a greatly complicated one whose solution requires great fertility in expedients and indomitable patience. I was impressed with this fact at the very beginning of my ministry, and what little success the Lord has given me in winning souls has seemed largely due on its human side to the plans and methods employed in preparing the way for the revival service. It has seemed a duty to give an account of the general principles which guided me in this work with such plans and methods as would illustrate them, and make them more suggestive, as a help to others whose thoughts have not taken the same direction, or whose youth and inexperience would lead them to welcome practical suggestions in this important work. Excerpt from Times of Refreshing: A History of American Revivals From 1740-1877, With Their Philosophy and Methods Amid the whirl of the revival scenes of this day, it would be difficult, if not impossible, to write an abiding history of these times. That can better be done in the perspective of other days. That has not been attempted. The practical aim of furthering the gospel by giving a report of its triumphs has been steadily held in view. Excerpt from History and Character of American Revivals of Religion The publication of this little volume may perhaps demand an apology. And it is hoped by the Author, that it may seem as reasonable, as it is simple. Soon after his arrival in London, he received a note from an esteemed and reverend brother, re questing him to deliver a discourse in his chapel on American Revivals. The Author answered the note, that he would take the request under consideration. The demand was altogether unanticipated, the topic delicate, and difficult of treatment before a popular assembly, -but yet interesting, and so far as the Author could learn, im portant in the eyes of British Christians; as the religious public in England were yet in suspense, as to the opinion proper to be entertained on the subject, on account.
