Excerpt from The Successful Type of Horse That May Be Profitably Raised by New England Farmers Our thoroughbreds which have come from the Arab stock have within the last one hundred and fifty years been raised from an average height of 14 - 2 hands to fully 15 - 3 and 16 hands. This has been brought about by careful, systematic and generous feeding of the youngsters, and it is a fact that many of the training stables to - day feed their two-year-olds twelve to fifteen quarts a day. It cannot be said that the New England farmer is the only one that has had the one point in view, namely, that of speed. Throughout the Whole United States this has been the only point sought for in trotters for years; and this is naturally so, because it is speed that brought the money and won the money. Cicero J. Hamlin, years ago, was criticised on all sides for purchasing Mambrino King, the so-called dude horse, in Kentucky, on account of his good looks. All those who had the pleasure of attending the Madison Square Garden show of 1893 - 94 remember the handsome chestnut stallion, as he was led down the side line of the ring, with simply a nose band in the hands of his colored attendant. The attention of the vast audience was perhaps equally divided between Mambrino King and Prescott Lawrence's celebrated hackney stallion Fashion. Excerpt from Horse Raising in Colonial New England Horses were used on the sugar plantations to turn the rollers of the cane-crushing mills, to haul the cane from the fields, and to transport sugar and supplies. They were in demand for saddle purposes also. As far as New England was concerned, there is ample evidence that the exportation of horses to supply this need of the sugar islands formed a very important part of the commerce which was carried on between the two groups of British colonies in the New World, and that it was equally important in the trade which grew up between New England and the French West Indies when these islands also began the cultiva tion of sugar. The observations of contemporary writers, the reports of the various colonial governors to the Board of Trade in London, port records and various commercial statistics of the period which have been made available by modern research, and many other scattered sources of information, indicate that this was the case. Excerpt from The Regeneration of the Morgan Horse Of the three types of light horses which American breeders have developed during a century and a quarter, none stands higher in history, judged from the interest and affection which have been devoted to it, none has had a more direct and lasting influence on other types, none, in fact, has been more uniform in type, more prepotent in breeding, or more nearly a fixed breed than the Morgan horse. With an ancestry which must have been Of the highest merit, reared on the limestone and granite hills of New England, imbued with remarkable endurance and stamina by a rigorous but invigor ating climate, these little horses seventy-five years ago yielded to none in popularity and held first place in the actual money value placed on individuals and on the service fees of sires. Fifty years ago Morgan stallions were received in the Show rings of Kentucky with enthusiasm. Yet during the last twenty years the name of Morgan has been anathema among the horse breeders of Kentucky, the breed has been rarely seen in the show ring at state and national fairs, and the live-stock press and many horsemen of authority have declared the Morgan to be an extinct race. Excerpt from Heavy Horses: Breeds and Management The task of attempting to give a short history of the rise and progress of the Shire horse is by no means an easy one. It is true that a considerable amount of evidence exists to show that in days long before the Christian era the breed of horses in these islands was considered to be, when viewed from a Roman standpoint, unusually large; but it should be remembered that size is always more or less comparative, and as we have no plates or drawings to guide us when speaking of the very early horses, we can only surmise that they were really of very considerable bulk, because their descendants were decidedly large, and bore a very close resemblance to the Shire horse of the present day. It must, however, be recollected that the horse of a certain period is naturally moulded so as to be suitable to the requirements of that time; and the Great Britain of two thousand years ago was, of course, a vastly different country from the Great Britain as we now find it. The nation then was troubled and disturbed, and the majority of the inhabitants may be described as warriors. Excerpt from The Horse in America: A Practical Treatise on the Various Types Common in the United States, With Something of Their History and Varying Characteristics There have been so many books written about horses that in offering a new one I feel that an ex planation, if not an apology, is due. And I am embarrassed as to how to frame the explanation without seeming to reflect on the books previous ly given to the public. Nothing could be further from my desire. Most of these previous books have been devoted to special kinds or types of horses without any effort to cover avery broad field. Some others have been frankly partizan with the avowed purpose of proving that this type or that was the only one that was worth serious con sideration. All these are interesting, but valuable chiefly to the careful student bent on going into the subject of horse breeding and horse training in all of its branches. To do this an ordinary reader. Excerpt from Frank Forester's Horse and Horsemanship of the United States and British Provinces of North America, Vol. 2 of 2 The thoroughbred horse of America having been treated m extenso in the whole of the first volume, which is devoted solely to that branch of the subject, it is my purpose, in this, to deal with the various races and types of the animal in general use, of breeding, conditioning, stabling, breaking, and managing in general. The thoroughbred horse of America is the only family Of the horse, on this continent, of pure and unmixed blood. Nor can even this pretension be made out to satisfaction, in all cases, even where the American thoroughbred can trace directly in both lines, to imported English thoroughbred dam and sire.
