This study reviews the literature on the provision of social protection by forest producer organizations, with a specific focus on their role and practices in this regard, the types of benefits they provide, the factors that may enhance or hinder the provision of benefits and the opportunities for taking advantage of these organizations to expand social protection coverage in marginalized communities. Chapter 2 presents evidence of social protection practices. Chapter 3 discusses the enabling factors and constraints to the provision of social protection by forest producer organizations. Chapter 4 discusses the opportunities for expanding social protection coverage via forest producer organizations, while Chapter 5 presents the conclusions of the study.

This study presents an inventory of practices highlighting the role rural organizations play in: (i) delivering member-based social assistance and insurance, and other complementary services; and (ii) collaborating with national and international counterparts in the delivery of national and international social protection programmes. The inventory builds on an initial review made by FAO in 2014. As a follow-up, in 2015 FAO issued a call for proposals from development agencies and international organizations in order to collect relevant experiences. The results were shared through a webinar held at the end of 2015. The process culminated with this report and a series of case studies (case studies are annexed at the end of this report). This inventory should contribute to enhancing the understanding of development practitioners regarding the strengths, limitations and opportunities associated with a stronger and more systematic role of rural organizations in SP.

Water – drinkable, usable water – is likely to be one of the most limiting resources in the future, given the growing global population, the high water demand of most agricultural production systems, and the confounding effects of climate change. We need to manage water wisely – efficiently, cost-effectively and equitably – if we are to avoid the calamity of a lack of usable water supply. Forested watersheds provide an estimated 75 percent of the world’s accessible freshwater resources, on which more than half the Earth’s people depend for domestic, agricultural, industrial and environmental purposes. Nearly three years ago, world leaders agreed to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – the central framework for guiding development policies throughout the world. This edition of The State of the World’s Forests is aimed at enhancing our understanding of how forests and their sustainable management contribute to achieving several of the SDGs. COVID-19 continues to have severe impacts on the societies, economies and environment of forest communities. The impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on forest communities have been shaped by pre-existing social, economic en environmental vulnerabilities. Despite existing vulnerabilities, forest communities have shwon a great deal of resilience. Forest communities have not been passive in the face of these significant impacts. Key responses have included the use of informal and formal social protection programmes. Climate change, demographic transitions, technological developments and innovation are megatrends affecting forestry work. As the conditions of forestry work change, so does the nature of the work-related risks. Despite efforts and improvements made over the past few decades, forests continue to be one of the most hazardous industrial workplaces, with those working in forests exposed to considerable occupational safety and health (OSH) risks as well as to a high incidence of occupational accidents and work-related diseases. In view of recent transformations in forestry work, and taking into account the recent inclusion of a safe and healthy working environment in the ILO’s framework of fundamental principles and rights at work, this report identifies trends and opportunities as well as challenges to promote safe and healthy working conditions in the forest sector. It contributes to understanding the importance of decent and sustainable work in forestry, with the objective of informing the design and implementation of policies and training programmes to advance a just transition in forestry following the framework of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly Sustainable Development Goals 8 on decent work and economic growth and 15 on life on land.
