Multilingualism enhances cognitive, neuro-linguistic and meta-linguistic development. It is proposed that improved student performance might be achieved if the U.S. educational system mainstreamed foreign language teaching as early as elementary school. The research hypothesis of this quantitative causal-comparative study was therefore that multilingual students should achieve significantly higher scores in standardized tests of basic skills relative to monolingual students. Simple random samples of 500 monolingual and 500 multilingual students in grades 5 through 8 with similar socio-economic status were drawn. There was a significant difference between the combined scores of the monolingual and multilingual students, indicating higher multilingual scores. The results of this and other studies should influence educational policy on language teaching. Urgent action is demanded from educational administrators and curriculum specialists to make foreign language teaching an integral part of the curriculum.

This thesis investigates the effect of multilingualism on the educational quality of primary schools in Uganda. Therefore, the setting in which this effect takes place, i.e. the way Uganda manages its multitude of languages in the education domain needs to be examined. This exploration leads to the hypothesis that multilingualism negatively influences learning achievement in the context of Ugandan language-in-education policy and perceived linguistic reality in primary classrooms. The quantitative part of the paper considers this hypothesis. The analysis suggests a positive correlation between multilingualism and the dispersion of educational outcomes within the country's districts. Additionally, it hints to a relationship between multilingualism and average learning achievement, but the direction of this effect is not clear. However, several shortcomings, including unobserved factors potentially connected to multilingualism and educational quality and small sample size imply that it is questionable whether the observed correlations can be interpreted as definitive causal relationships. Therefore, the quantitative analysis is not able to conclusively prove or refute the hypothesis that multilingualism negatively affects educational achievement in the setting of Ugandan primary education.

Abstract : The language and communication skills of foreign students have long been a concern in U.S. universities. The majority of U.S. universities require foreign students for whom English is not their native language to take English language proficiency tests such as the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) as part of admission requirements. Some universities have included interventions to increase the success of Chinese students against their struggle to understand English course content. One such program is the Gateway to Successful Tomorrow Bilingual Degree Program (GST). The gap to be addressed on this study was that the effectiveness of GST has not been formally evaluated among foreign students particularly overseas Chinese students studying at U.S. universities. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of the GST among overseas Chinese students studying at U.S. universities as measured through students’ grade point averages (GPA) and TOEFL scores. The theoretical framework that guided this study was the Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory. The quantitative study used a causal comparative design to gather quantitative data from student achievement records and TOEFL scores. Pearson’s correlation analysis and analysis of variance were conducted to predict if underlying relationships exist among variables. Key findings of the analyses showed that GST students had a significantly higher GPA than non-GST student. However, results also indicated that there was no evidence that the GST program significantly improved TOEFL scores. The GST program had an overall positive impact on the international Chinese students’ academic performance and with continued research international students stand to gain even more from this program.

For decades, international researchers and educators have sought to understand how to address cultural and linguistic diversity in education. This book offers the keys to doing so: it brings together short biographies of thirty-six scholars, representing a wide range of universities and countries, to allow them to reflect on their own personal life paths, and how their individual life experiences have led to and informed their research. This approach highlights how theories and concepts have evolved in different contexts, while opening up pedagogical possibilities from diverse backgrounds and enriched by the life experiences of leading researchers in the field. Beyond these questions, the book also explores the dynamic relationships between languages, power and identities, as well as how these relationships raise broader societal issues that permeate both global and local language practices. It is essential reading for students, teacher educators, and researchers interested in the impact of multilingualism on education.
