This collection of essays serves as a response to passionate discussions regarding how librarians are perceived, reigniting an examination of librarian presentation within the field and in the public eye, employing theories and methodologies from throughout the social sciences. Through deconstructing the perceived truths of our profession and employing a critical eye, we can work towards improved status, increased diversity, and greater acceptance of each other.

Martinez, a librarian himself, has written a love letter to the urban forest of the dark, wild library, where ideas and stories roam free.
From its earliest days to the present, the onscreen image of the librarian has remained largely the same. A silent 1921 film set the precedent for two female librarian characters: a dowdy spinster wears glasses and a bun hairstyle, and an attractive young woman is overworked and underpaid. Silent films, however, employed a variety of characteristics for librarians, showed them at work on many different tasks, and featured them in a range of dramatic, romantic, and comedic situations. The sound era (during which librarians appeared in more than 200 films) frequently exaggerated these characteristics and situations, strongly influencing the general image of librarians. This chronologically arranged work analyzes the stereotypical image of librarians, male and female, in primarily American and British motion pictures from the silent era to the 21st century. The work briefly describes each film, offering some critical commentary, and then examines its librarian, considering every aspect of the total character from socio-economic conditions and motivations for leaving or not leaving the library, to personal attributes (such as clothing, hair, and age) and entanglements with the opposite sex, to commonly used props, plot situations and lines ("Shush!"). The work comments on whether librarians and library work are depicted accurately and analyzes the development of the public's image of a librarian. Scientists deserve public recognition. The ways that they are depicted, however, are severely limited in physical and personal traits, helping to establish and enhance stereotypes under the general title of ‘scientist’. These stereotypes range from the arrogant researcher who wants to rule the world, to the lab coat wearing ‘nerdy’ genius, but all generally fall to an extreme view of an existing perception of what a scientist should look and be like. For example, the popular image of ‘a scientist’ overlooks the presence of women almost entirely unless attributed to specific subjects and/or with narrow character depictions. The implications can be far-reaching. Young people, being heavily swayed by what they see and hear in the media, may avoid scientific careers because of these limited or unflattering portrayals of the scientific community, regardless of whether they reflect real life. Based on findings from the Light’13 project, this book examines such stereotypes and questions whether it is possible to adjust people’s perception of scientists and to increase interest in science and scientific careers through a series of specific actions and events.

The sad reason - Russian aggression - forced the world to talk about this great Eastern European country, its history over the past several centuries was undeservedly in the shadow of the neighbor-invader. But do you know at least something about Ukrainian literature? We offer to get acquaintance with it not from the very beginning, but from the Renaissance. The reason for that is very simple - a significant part of the authors from Ukraine of that time used Latin to express their thoughts and feelings as well as the rest of Europe. This tradition has not completely collapsed even today, to prove that: if you conscientiously have studied and still remember this classic language, you can enjoy the quotes in the original. At the Renaissance era the intellectuals have considered themselves as a separate community, higher than political boundaries. So, the literature they have created is a common heritage. So, here in front of you - still unknown page of European literature, written in Ukraine. Meet it, taste it, share it!
