Excerpt from Diseases of Women: A Clinical Guide to Their Diagnosis and Treatment I have written this book because it seemed to me that a book was wanted which should guide the student and practitioner to the. Diagnosis and right treatment of the diseases of women. I have tried to present the different diseases which affect the organs peculiar to women in the way in which they appear in practice. I have not sought to quote everything that has been recommended, but to state principles, and in applying those principles to recom mend that which, having tried it, I know to be good. I may plead that I have one qualification for writing such a book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Diseases of Women: Including Their Pathology, Causation, Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment; A Manual for Students and Practitioners IN the following pages I have attempted to present to the student and junior practitioner such an account of the diseases incidental to women as will prove a reliable, practical clinical guide. Those who, from lack of time or opportunity during their stu dent career, neglected to make themselves familiar with a subject which will form a most important item in the daily routine of ordinary practice, may thus be enabled to repair the omission. My endeavor has been to give an impartial account, and if, in dealing with the subject of displacements of the uterus, too much prominence should appear to have been given to their mechanical treatment, it has been in order that the question should be fairly represented, not that the practitioner is recommended to place too great reliance upon mechanical appliances. The task of condensing within the limits of a manual all that has stood the test of time and experience in this specialty, has been a difficult one. Doubtless many omissions will be found. Still, I trust these may be rectified by encouraging the student to investigate the subject of gynecology more exhaustively in larger works. I have to acknowledge my own indebtedness for much valuable information to Dr. Barnes's Clinical History of the Medical and Surgical Diseases of Women, Dr. T. Gaillard Thomas's Fracti cal Treatise on the Diseases of Women, and other similar works duly acknowledged in the text. Excerpt from Diseases of Women: A Manual of Gynecology Designed Especially for the Use of Students and General Practitioners This book was originally designed to fill a gap which had remained open notwithstanding the multiplicity of gynecological treatise and text-books. Its main objects were twofold: in the first place to give the student clearly, but with considerable detail, the methods of examination and the simple forms of treatments of the most common diseases of the pelvic organs; and, in the second place, to help the busy general practitioner to understand and treat the gynecological cases which he meets in his everyday practice. For brevity and clearness the treatment is mainly confined to such measures as have been practically found by the author to prove of the greatest benefit. Special attention has been paid to the description and explanation of many minor, though important, points which are ordinarily omitted from text-books, but which are nevertheless of great value. The book aims to be practical, and is therefore devoted principally to diagnosis and treatment, to the exclusion of unsettled theories. Such was the book in its first two editions.
