Excerpt from The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, Vol. 28 Rolling Mill at Manchester, in Allegheny County, to make iron rails. Connected with this mill were two coke furnaces, built in 1863. The company operated the works until Sep tember, 186 7, when they were leased by Springer Harbaugh. On January 1, 1870, Harbaugh, Mathias Owens took pos session as owners, and on August 1, 1874, they failed, when the manufacture of rails was abandoned. The works them selves have long been abandoned A few other iron-rail mills in Western Pennsylvania, including those which were equipped for the manufacture only of mine rails and other light rails, need not be mentioned. Of these mills those which made rails of heavy sections never at any time pro duced any considerable tonnage. It is a noteworthy fact that Allegheny County, with all its enterprise in the manufacture of iron and steel, did not begin to make rails of heavy sec tions until the Superior Rolling Mill was built in 1865. Iron rails are not now made in Western Pennsylvania, except occasionally a very few tons of light rails for lum ber and mine roads. Excerpt from The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, 1882, Vol. 6 The Trustees of the building have paid the balance required to complete the purchase, and the property now belongs to the Historical Society. To place the building in a condition to be occupied, and to give the requisite fire-proof accommodation and an auditorium; at least more is needed. Neither the Council nor the Building Committee can be expected to importune the public for this sum. It should be furnished by voluntary subscriptions, and, as the subscriptions already made have come from less than one-half of the members, it is earnestly hoped that all interested will now render what assistance may be convenient to them. The 1760s were a period of great agitation in the American colonies. The policies implemented by the British resulted in an outcry from the Americans that inaugurated the radical ideas leading to the Revolution in 1775. John Dickinson led the way in the "war of ink" between America and Britain, which saw over 1,000 pamphlets and essays written both for and against British policy. King George III, the new British monarch, wrote extensively on the role of Britain in the colonial world and sought to find a middle way between the quickly rising feelings on both sides of the debate. This book tells the story of this radical decade as it occurred in writing, drawing from primary sources and rarely seen exchanges.

With the American revolutionaries in discord following victory at Yorktown and the Paris Peace Treaty of 1783, the proposed federal Constitution of 1787 faced an uncertain future when it was sent to the states for ratification. Sensing an historic moment, three authors--Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay--circulated 85 essays among their fellow statesmen, arguing for a strong federal union. Next to the Constitution itself, The Federalist papers are the most referenced statement of the Founding Fathers' intentions in forming the U.S. government. This book takes a fresh look at the papers in the context of the times in which they were created.

Excerpt from The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, 1885, Vol. 9 In November, 1755, an Act of Parliament had been passed for raising a regiment of four battalions, each of 1000 men, in America. The men were to be drawn from the Swiss and other foreigners settled in the colonies, but principally from the Germans in Pennsylvania, to be strengthened, however, by seven or eight hundred Old soldiers from Germany. Major John Rutherford, to whom the recruit ing of the regiment was committed, writes to Governor Shirley, from Philadelphia, on the 29th of June, 1756.
