DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from The Parables of Our Lord Explained and Applied The aim of this work is not critical elucidation, but simple, practical explanation and application. The chapters are intended to be read, either privately, or in any of the various ways in which plain family sermons are found to be useful. In each parable the main scope has been regarded, rather than those more minute points, which, in many cases at least, must be looked on as mere accessories; nor has the author gone into those refinements of application in which an ingenious fancy is apt to indulge, but which often tend to draw away the mind from the great lesson intended to be taught. Long words and involved sentences have been avoided, and the authors aim has been to use great plainness of speech, in the earnest hope that the book may be of use to the poor and unlearned, as well as to those of more cultivated minds. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from The Parables of Our Lord This parable had to be spoken. It gave ex pression to thoughts which burdened the mind of Jesus throughout His ministry. On the day He uttered it, he had left the house and was sitting by the sea-side, and there were gathered unto Him great multitudes. He had no difficulty in finding an audience. It is one of the greatest pleasures to listen to a good speaker. It is a pleasure which attracts young and old, rich and poor, educated and uneducated. A good speaker is always sure of an audience, and especially where he has not to encounter the rivalry of books. But as Jesus watched the crowd assembling, and perceived the various dispositions with which the people came, He could not but reflect how much of what He had to say must certainly be lost on many. He knew He had that to tell men which. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Notes on the Parables of Our Lord The two fables of the Old Testament, that of the trees which would choose a king (j udg. Ix. 8 and of the thistle and the cedar (2 Kin. Xiv. May seem to impeach the universality of this rule, but do not so in fact. For in neither is it God who speaks, nor yet messengers of his, delivering his counsel; but men, and from an earthly standing-point, not a heavenly. Jotham will teach the men of Shechem their folly, not their sin, in making Abimelech king over them; the fable never lifting itself to the rebuke of sin, as it is sin - this lesson lies outside of its sphere - but only in so far as it is also folly. And Jehoash, in the same way, would make Amaziah see his presumption and pride, in challenging a mightier to the con ict; not thereby teaching him any moral lesson, but Only giving evidence in the fable which he uttered, that his own pride was ofiended by the challenge of the Jewish king. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Practical Studies on the Parables of Our Lord The object of this book is best explained by its title. It consists of 'practical studies on the Parables.' There is no attempt made at a careful exegesis, or at a, detailed commentary on the text. I have merely tried to draw out the leading practical thought, as I conceived it, in each of the Parables, and to apply it. If what has been written should prove of any practical help to those who read it, I shall be more. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
