The hymn is really what is sung, and therefore should never be belittled by association with a tune below it in dignity, or inadequate to express its sentiment. Thus the first requisite of a Hymnal is a worthy selection of hymns; and the second, a gathering of genuinely musical tunes, as far as possible composed for the hymns to which they are set.
