DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis report reviews the most current data on women's progress in mathematics and science achievement, attitudes, course-taking patterns, and college majors. Results of recent studies suggest that many factors such as parental encouragement, teacher preparation, teacher student interactions, curriculum content, hands-on laboratory experiences, self-concept, attitudes toward mathematics and science, availability of mentors, and home resources contribute to the attitudes, access, and achievement of young women in mathematics and science. The research cited here suggests that the gender gap in science and mathematics in the United States appears at Grade 10 while internationally the gap appears around Grade 8. Despite this, there are still substantial differences between women and men in mathematics, computer science, engineering and science fields. Contains 29 references. (DDR)

DOWNLOAD EBOOKPresenting the latest findings in topics from across the mathematical spectrum, this volume includes results in pure mathematics along with a range of new advances and novel applications to other fields such as probability, statistics, biology, and computer science. All contributions feature authors who attended the Association for Women in Mathematics Research Symposium in 2015: this conference, the third in a series of biennial conferences organized by the Association, attracted over 330 participants and showcased the research of women mathematicians from academia, industry, and government.

DOWNLOAD EBOOK"American media often ask why women can't do mathematics. Any answer is misleading. Better questions are needed, along with indications of how to find potential answers. The Committee on the Participation of Women of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) has identified more than fifty cultural customs that discourage aspiring women mathematicians. How can these customs be changed? What can be done to recruit, retain, and acknowledge women in mathematics? The Committee was established in 1987 to 'work for full involvement of women in the affairs of the MAA and to develop MAA activities that will encourage women in careers in the mathematical sciences.' With this book the committee seeks to expand the number and effectiveness of those winning women into mathematics."--Publisher's description.
