War is looming as England is riven by a power struggle between King Henry III and Simon de Montfort. Into the chaos comes a fearsome figure, Norman of Torn, a warrior with a thirst for English blood. With a bounty on his head, he gathers a huge band of thieves and they run riot across the country. Norman even infiltrates de Montfort's army and seduces his daughter Bertrade. Then, as he faces near-certain death in a battle, a remarkable secret is revealed - one that could shake England and the Royal family to the core. This is perfect reading for fans of 'Ivanhoe' by Sir Walter Scott and 'The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood' by Howard Pyle. Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) was an American author who created the character Tarzan. He wrote scores of adventure, science fiction and fantasy novels, including the 'Pellucidar' series, the 'Amtor' series and the 'Caspak' trilogy. He took to writing after a failed mining venture with his brothers and seven years as a pencil sharpener wholesaler. His novel 'Tarzan of the Apes' was the springboard to fame and fortune, spawning countless movies, a cartoon strip and merchandise.

His intentions are partially subverted by a priest who befriends Norman and teaches him his letters and chivalry towards women...

Known just as much for his highly realistic, impeccably researched settings and authentic characters as for his action-packed plots, Jackson Cain kicks off a new series featuring notorious outlaw Torn Slater. In this first adventure, he blazes through the lawless wilds of 19th Century Arizona Territory and into the brutal violence of Mexico under the savage dictatorship of Porfirio Diaz. Wanted in thirteen states. Locked up for two years in a Mexican prison. Released into the wilds of the American West with a twenty-thousand-dollar bounty on his head. The outlaw Torn Slater doesn't just live outside the law, he takes it into his own hands--and makes it cry for mercy... After robbing some banks, Slater knows he should lay low. But when a beautiful widow asks for his help, he can't say no. Her reckless son has gone looking for trouble in Mexico--and found it in a woman called "La Senorita." This power-mad femme fatale combines the torture methods of the Spanish Inquisition with the heart-ripping rituals of the Aztecs to get whatever she wants. And she wants the widow's son. Slater would be lying if he said taking down "La Senorita" would be easy. But dead men don't lie...

A REESE'S BOOK CLUB PICK * INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * BELLETRIST BOOK CLUB PICK * INDIE NEXT SELECTION * LIBRARY READS SELECTION * AMAZON EDITORS' CHOICE * WASHINGTON POST BEST OF THE YEAR The "terrifying, wise, tender, and thrilling" (R.O. Kwon) adventure story of a fugitive girl, a mysterious gang of robbers, and their dangerous mission to transform the Wild West. In the year of our Lord 1894, I became an outlaw. The day of her wedding, 17 year old Ada's life looks good; she loves her husband, and she loves working as an apprentice to her mother, a respected midwife. But after a year of marriage and no pregnancy, in a town where barren women are routinely hanged as witches, her survival depends on leaving behind everything she knows. She joins up with the notorious Hole in the Wall Gang, a band of outlaws led by a preacher-turned-robber known to all as the Kid. Charismatic, grandiose, and mercurial, the Kid is determined to create a safe haven for outcast women. But to make this dream a reality, the Gang hatches a treacherous plan that may get them all killed. And Ada must decide whether she's willing to risk her life for the possibility of a new kind of future for them all. Featuring an irresistibly no-nonsense, courageous, and determined heroine, Outlawed dusts off the myth of the old West and reignites the glimmering promise of the frontier with an entirely new set of feminist stakes. Anna North has crafted a pulse-racing, page-turning saga about the search for hope in the wake of death, and for truth in a climate of small-mindedness and fear.

Here is a story that has lain dormant for seven hundred years. At first it was suppressed by one of the Plantagenet kings of England. Later it was forgotten. I happened to dig it up by accident. The accident being the relationship of my wife's cousin to a certain Father Superior in a very ancient monastery in Europe. He let me pry about among a quantity of mildewed and musty manuscripts and I came across this. It is very interesting -- partially since it is a bit of hitherto unrecorded history, but principally from the fact that it records the story of a most remarkable revenge and the adventurous life of its innocent victim -- Richard, the lost prince of England. In the retelling of it I have left out most of the history. What interested me was the unique character about whom the tale revolves -- the visored horseman who -- but let us wait until we get to him. It all happened in the thirteenth century, and while it was happening it shook England from north to south and from east to west; and reached across the channel and shook France...
