Stephen Perkinson's "The likeness of the king" challenges the canonical account of the invention of modern portrait practices, offering a case against the tendency of recent scholarship to identify likenesses of historical personages as "the first modern portraits". Focusing on the Valois court of France, he argues that local practice prompted shifts in the late medieval understanding of how images could represent individuals and prompted artists and patrons to deploy likeness in a variety of ways.

(Greek Ιωαννης ο Δαμασκηνος) - reverend saint, one of the Church Fathers, theologian and hymnographer. He bore the hereditary nickname Mansur ("victorious"). His father Sergius (Ibn-Serjun) served at the caliph’s court in Damascus with the title of “great dogofet,” a tax collector. Subsequently, he was replaced by John himself. According to legend, he studied with Cosma (later of Mayumsk) with a captive monk from Calabria (also named Cosma). About 736 he was tonsured at the monastery of St. Sava near Jerusalem. Known as the largest systematizer of Christian dogma; he owns the fundamental work "The Source of Knowledge", which includes the philosophical ("Dialectics"), accusatory ("On heresies") and dogmatic ("Exact exposition of the Orthodox Faith") sections. During the period of iconoclasm, he advocated the veneration of icons, the author of “Three Defensive Words in Support of Icon veneration,” in which iconoclasm is understood as a heresy of heresy, and for the first time there is a distinction between “service”, befitting only to God, and “worship”, provided to created things, icons included. Abraham Kuyper firmly believed that Jesus Christ was King not just of Christians, but of the entire cosmos. Aquinas on Beauty explores the nature and role of beauty in the thought of Thomas Aquinas. Beginning with a standard definition of beauty provided by Aquinas, it explores each of the components of that definition. The result is a comprehensive account of Aquinas’s formal view on the subject, supplemented by an exploration into Aquinas’s commentary on Dionysius’s Divine Names, including a comparison of his views with those of both Dionysius and those of Aquinas’s mentor, Albert the Great. To rule their vast new American territories, the Spanish monarchs appointed viceroys in an attempt to reproduce the monarchical system of government prevailing at the time in Europe. But despite the political significance of the figure of the viceroy, little is known about the mechanisms of viceregal power and its relation to ideas of kingship. Examining this figure, The King's Living Image challenges long-held perspectives on the political nature of Spanish colonialism, recovering, at the same time, the complexity of the political discourses and practices of Spanish rule. It does so by studying the viceregal political culture that developed in New Spain in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and the mechanisms, both formal and informal, of viceregal rule. In so doing, The King's Living Image questions the very existence of a "colonial state" and contends that imperial power was constituted in ritual ceremonies. It also emphasizes the viceroys' significance in carrying out the civilizing mission of the Spanish monarchy with regard to the indigenous population. The King's Living Image will redefine the ways in which scholars have traditionally looked at the viceregal administration in colonial Mexico.
