DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis is the first book on Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC), an advanced concrete material attracting world-wide attention in both the academic community and in industry. The book presents a comprehensive coverage of the material design methodology, processing methodology, mechanical and durability properties, smart functions, and application case studies. It combines effective use of illustrations, graphical data, and tables. It de-emphasizes mathematics in favor of physical understanding. The book serves as an introduction to the subject matter, or as a reference to those conducting research in ECC. It will also be valuable to engineers who need to quickly search for relevant information in a single comprehensive text.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKBringing together in one volume the latest research and information, this book provides a detailed guide to the selection and use of aggregates in concrete. After an introduction defining the purpose and role of aggregates in concrete, the authors present an overview of aggregate sources and production techniques, followed by a detailed study of their physical, mechanical and chemical properties. This knowledge is then applied to the use of aggregates in both plastic and hardened concretes, and in the overall mix design. Special aggregates and their applications are discussed in detail, as are the current main specifications, standards and tests.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKfib Bulletin 73: Tall Buildings is the result of a collaboration between the fib and MPA The Concrete Centre (UK). Task Group 1.6 High-rise buildings, within fib Commission 1: Structures, was drawn together with a mandate to write about the experience and know-how pertinent to the development, design and construction of tall concrete buildings. The group’s findings are presented in this state-of the-art report. Tall buildings are a unique challenge to engineers, even to those with extensive experience of low-rise structures. The bulletin explains the critical interfaces with other professionals, for example architects, building services engineers, façade and lift specialists, geotechnical engineers and wind specialists, highlighting how these parties interact with engineers and can influence and guide the development of the structural solution. The key factors in choosing the most appropriate structural system are discussed. The bulletin covers the criteria used to select the most economical structural elements including the foundations, the vertical elements and the floor slabs. Examples of common construction methods are presented and their effects on the structural engineering design are discussed. Tall buildings can undergo significant deformation during their construction and service life. These movements need to be understood by the designer and potentially compensated for in the design and during construction. One of the main particularities of the design of tall buildings is the dominance of the lateral loading from wind and seismic actions. The bulletin provides a discussion of these important topics and sets out the current approach taken by experienced engineers. Designers of tall buildings also need to understand the dynamic behaviour of the structure and confine the motion of the building to within acceptable limits. Approaches to damping and dynamic performance are discussed and guidance provided on the appropriate occupant comfort limits.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKExtreme poverty, which intensified in India during colonial rule, peaked in the 1920s—after decades of imperialist exploitation, famine, and disease—a time when architects, engineers, and city authorities proposed a new type of housing for India’s urban poor and industrial workers. As Farhan Karim argues, economic scarcity became a central inspiration for architectural modernism in the subcontinent. As India moved from colonial rule to independence, the Indian government, business entities, international NGOs, and intergovernmental agencies took major initiatives to modernize housing conditions and the domestic environment of the state’s low-income population. Of Greater Dignity than Riches traces multiple international origins of austerity as an essential ingredient of postcolonial development. By prescribing model villages, communities, and ideal houses for the working class, this project of austerity eventually reduced poverty into a stylized architectural representation. In this rich and original study, Karim explains the postwar and postcolonial history of low-cost housing as an intertwined process of global transferences of knowledge, Cold War cultural politics, postcolonial nationalism, and the politics of economic development.
