Excerpt from Notes on the Anti-Corn Law Struggle In revising my MS. of "Notes on the Anti-Corn Law Struggle," I am struck with the fact that one-third or more of the book is the work of him who was throughout the whole of the Struggle the advocate in Parliament of the Repeal of the Corn Laws; and is now the only survivor of a group of contemporaries among whom "si mea fama in obscuro sit, nobilitate ac magnitudine eorum, meo qui nomini afficient, me consoler." I will state shortly what led me to become one of the labourers in the work of repealing the Corn Laws. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. First Published in 1968. This second edition of the History of the Anti-Corn-Law League features a new introduction by W. H. Chaloner while the main text pursues the goal of cataloguing and archiving the timeline of events within the executive council. The beginning of 1848 saw workmen busily engaged in erecting the Free Trade Hall by which time it was supposed the Corn Law would be repealed. This remained standing, often used, until 1853, when its defeat showcased that the principles of free trade were fully recognized and the historical timeline for this edition begins.

Although the Anti-Corn Law league played a most important part in the politics of the 1840's, there is no modern study of its activities and organization. Based on several years work on the original sources, as well as papers belonging to George Wilson, President of the League for most of its life, this book sheds light on the internal history and organization of the League. Written from a political perspective, Dr McCord describes the origin, organization and activities of the League, together with its effect on the contemporary political scene, and as such, fills an important gap in our knowledge of the political history of early Victorian England. At the same time, the book provides an analysis of an unusually well-documented political pressure group, making it a most welcome addition to literature for historians and economic historians, as well as students of political science. This book was first published in 1958.
