Excerpt from The Historical Collections of the Topsfield Historical Society, 1922, Vol. 27 Mr. Huntington proposed to introduce witnesses to prove Mr. Pike's general good character. Mr. Saltonstall objected, because the defendants did not propose to put Mr. Pike's general character in issue, and cited the opinion of Lord Abbott, that in a case of libel, it was not in the power of the plaintiff to go into general character, unless his general character' was impeached by the defendants. The Court inclined to the ground assumed by the defendants, and deemed such proof unnecessary, as the jury, by presumption of law must take the plaintiff's general character to be good, until it was impeached by the defendants. After a Short consultation, the Counsel for the Plaintiff waived the point, and proceeded to call witnesses, as to Mr. Pike's profession, and standing as necessary in order to enable the jury to estimate the damages he must in all probability sustain, if the facts contained in the libel were believed to be true. In the winter of 1692 something terrible and frightening began in Salem Village. It started with several villagers having strange fits, screaming, and unnaturally contorting themselves, and ended with almost two hundred people in jail, and at least twenty-five dead. Witchcraft accusations--claims that some inhabitants had forsaken God to become servants of the Devil--spread from Salem Village across Massachusetts, ensnaring innocent people from all strata of society under a burden of assumed guilt. One of the most significant accusations, and most unlikely, was against a seventy-one-year-old grandmother, Rebecca Nurse. The accusations against Nurse, a well-respected member in the community, seemed unbelievable. Unflinchingly, this ailing elderly woman insisted on her innocence and refused to falsely confess. Supported by many in Salem, Nurse's family and neighbors challenged her accusers in court and prepared a thorough defense for her, yet nothing could surmount the fear of witchcraft, and she was sentenced to death. Nurse, seen as a martyr for the truth, later became the first person accused of witchcraft to be memorialized in North America. In A Salem Witch: The Trial, Execution, and Exoneration of Rebecca Nurse, the first full account of Nurse's life, Daniel A. Gagnon vividly recreates seventeenth-century Salem, and in the process challenges previous interpretations of Nurse's life and the 1692 witch hunt in general. Through primary source research, he reveals how the Nurse family's role in several disputes prior to the witch hunt was different than previously thought, as well as how Nurse's case helps answer the important question of whether the accusations of witchcraft were caused by mental illness or malicious intent. A Salem Witch reveals a remarkable woman whose legacy has transformed how the witch hunt has been remembered and memorialized.

Archaeologists and curators working on military sites have to address the problems of what kinds of objects were used by officers and men, how and when they were used and whether they were privately owned or supplied by the military. To help both these groups and for the interest of the general public an illustrated catalogue of glassware used by the British military in Canada from ca. 1755 to 1820 was compiled. The catalogue focusses on the Seven Years' War (1756-63), the American Revolution (1776-83) and the War of 1812-14. Categories used include drinking by type of beverage, storage and serving vessels, drinking glasses, wine glass coolers and finger glasses; eating vessels for condiments, serving vessels and desserts; canteens; health and personal care; and lighting. Material on ownership, sources of supply, and details on production are also included.
