In her latest exciting technothriller, acclaimed author Kimberly Unger (Nucleation) delivers a badass cyberpunk heroine in a vivid whodunit that careens between our world and the virtual one. Gaming expert Unger creates a vastly entertaining future where the rich still play by different rules, but technology is still the wildcard. "A thriller that kept me occupied for days." --Lightspeed Magazine on Nucleation Underground hacker Eliza McKay is one of the best in the virtual space where people create personas that can interact as data. When rich or important people get stuck in the Swim--for reasons that are sleazy, illegal, or merely unlucky--it's McKay's job to extract them. And McKay's job just got a lot more dangerous. While on an assignment in Singapore, McKay is flagged by an investigative outfit led by Ellie Brighton. Brighton desperately needs her corporate superior extracted from the Swim. The brute-force hacking tactics of Brighton's tech Rose have already failed. The executive's personality remains trapped and fragmented; if left for much longer, he won't survive. But the job is turning out to be more dangerous than McKay initially thought: her house is broken into, her target is surprisingly reluctant to be extracted, and something is menacing her informational AI sprite, Spike. Something big.

The history of the United States of America is also the history of the energy sector. Natural gas provides the fuel that allows us to heat our homes in winter and cool them in summer with the touch of a button or turn of a dial—when the industry runs smoothly. From the oil crisis of the 1970s to the fall of Enron and the California electricity crisis at the turn of the century to contemporary issues of hydraulic fracking, poorly conceived government policies have sometimes left us shivering, stranded, or with significantly lighter wallets. In this expansive narrative, Charles Blanchard traces the rise of natural gas and the regulatory missteps that nearly ruined the market. Beginning in the 1880s, The Extraction State explains how the New Deal regulatory compact came together in the 1920s, even before the Great Depression, and how it fell apart in the 1970s. From there, the book dissects the policies that affect us today, and explores where we might be headed in the near future.

"Welcome to extraction testing" Clementine has spent her whole life preparing for her 16th birthday when she'll be tested for Extraction, in the hopes of being sent from Kiel's toxic Surface to the much safer Core, where people live without fear or starvation. When she proves promising enough to be "extracted," she must leave without Logan, the boy she loves. Torn apart from her only sense of family, Clem promises to come back and save him from brutal Surface life. What she finds initially at the Core is a utopia compared to the Surface—it's free of hard labor, gun-wielding officials, and the moon's lethal acid—but life is anything but safe, and Clementine learns that the planet's leaders are planning to exterminate Surface dwellers—and that means Logan, too. Trapped by the steel walls of the underground and the lies that keep her safe, Clementine must find a way to escape and rescue Logan and the rest of the planet. But the planet's leaders don't want her running—they want her subdued. With great writing, fluid dialogue, and a cast of unforgettable characters, Stephanie Diaz's Extraction is a page-turning, gripping read—sure to entertain lovers of Hunger Games and Ender's Game—and leave them breathless for more.

The Seminar on Improved Techniques for the Extraction of Primary Forms of Energy was organized by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) and held at Vienna from 10 to 14 November 1980 at the invitation of the Austrian Government.* Mr. H. Sparker, a Director of the Austrian Mineral-Oil Administration (OeMV) , was elected chairman of the seminar. Mr. V. Zanchev (Bulgaria), Mr. J. Medaets (Belgium) and Mr. S. Doleschall (Hungary) were elected chairmen of working meetings 1, 2 and 3 respectively. At the invitation of the Austrian Mineral-Oil Administration (OeMV), the parti cipants inspected the steam-injection installations in the Maustrenk and explora tory fields and the oil and gas production facilities in the north Vienna basin. In a statement on behalf of the Austrian Government at the opening meeting, Mr. A. Nussbaumer, Secretary of State, emphasized that remedies for the difficult energy situation depended in the long run on the contribution of scientific and technical research; whence the significance of the seminar. Efforts now in progress must be directed towards more rational use, by means of existing or new techniques, of proved resources of fossil fuels. The participants would, he hoped, devote their discussions to more effective technologies which would enable the recovery factor to be improved with fewer repercussions on the environment. Austria in general, and its Alpine regions in particular, were "rich in poor mineral deposits", and consequently public undertakings, universities and industrial research institutions had a very real interest in the seminar's work.

Energy is the driving force of human development and economic growth. The ceaseless demand for energy resources has triggered the development of extraction projects around the world. This, in turn, has exerted a significant pressure on natural resources as well as on the environment. Since the performance of human rights depends on the environment and on access to natural resources, this Study aims to show the extent to which the negative environmental impact arising from extraction operations prevents the effective realization of human rights. The analysis of substantive and procedural human rights in the light of the case law of international human rights courts provides all stakeholders involved in an energy extraction project with the tools and mechanisms to prevent environmental damage and to ensure the protection of human rights.
