Excerpt from The Bowdoin Quill, Vol. 3: March, 1899 It is pleasing to note that the watchful care so inaugurated has been followed by the complete preservation of the instru ment, the planets still go around as mer rily as of yore. Only squeaking a little on their axes. This does not comprise the list of astronomical apparatus by any means. There were sextants and globes and sun-dials, and all of such an excel lence as to excite our surprise that the college ever managed to possess them. Nor was philosophical apparatus of other sorts wanting. In the first half of the century at least there was ap paratus for performing every then known experiment in electricity and magnetism - batteries large and small, electrical ma chines big and little, and a profusion of accessories of all sorts. Excerpt from The Bowdoin Quill, Vol. 3: January, 1899 We spent the night at Subashiri, the village at the foot of the mountain. Starting next morning before sunrise, we saw a new and splendid transformation. The dawning light, striking the bare lava that clothes the mountain slopes, turned the whole mass to amethyst. Then came the first red sunlight and changed the amethyst to a gigantic ruby, gleaming against the sky. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Bowdoin Quill, Vol. 3: May, 1899 In humble scenes, too, a touch of the imagination can transform many figures of the modern streets into romantic char acters of the middle ages. You see a dark face shadowed beneath an ancestral slouch hat, the sort of face you prefer to meet in the bright sunlight, and since your safety is assured, you like to imag ine that the folds of that cape slung care lessly around the left shoulder, conceal an ugly-looking knife. Over there stands a little donkey, old and gray and crabbed enough to make you think he has borne the blows of several genera tions; his patient, cynical face needs only the prolonged anguish of his bray to convince you of the misery of his lot, and to win your pity and affection. In passing we expect to see that narrow cross street end in some dark court; instead, a glimpse of the distant hills charms us with its pleasant surprise. Florence has a habit of flashing her beauty on us when we least expect it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Bowdoin Quill, Vol. 20: November, 1916 At the death of the priest, so the tradition ran, this box was buried with him, but afterwards appeared on the altar of the God, where it was at once recognized and venerated. I am going to give you this box, and that you may always carry it on your person, I want you to use it as a match box. It may prove of even greater service. A few days later, I received a tele gram announcing Doctor Bowdoin's sudden death. Thus ended my friend's mortal existence, but for more than a year no day had passed that I did not entertain some thought of him - his search for esoteric truth; his eagerness to see me happily married; his last words, uttered, I became convinced, under a premonition of his impending end.
