Excerpt from The Blue Flag Mrs. Gould had no friends in high quarters to win for her son a position in the navy. She had not even an Old sea captain for an uncle to get her boy a good berth. He must take his chance before the mast, if he became a sailor at all. A rough, hard way of life, truly, for a lad who had enjoyed all the com forts Of a quiet New England home. Excerpt from The Fruiting of the Blue Flag (Iris Versicolor L.) AT the time of the adjournment of my college classes last June, I spent a few hours afield, watching the blue flags and their insect visitors, at first solely for the pleasant recreation that such study affords. But I soon made a few enticing little discoveries which set me to work in earnest. I began by locating all the clumps that were easy of access from my home in Lake Forest, and then I studied them daily during the flowering season, and almost daily thereafter throughout the summer. The facts that first caught my attention were: (i) that there are many visitors to these flowers that seem to have been unnoticed hitherto; (2) that most of these are illicit visitors and (3) that the ill-adapted ones are habitually deceived by the flower itself as to its proper entrance. I propose to give in the following pages the more important results of the season's observations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Defending His Flag: Or a Boy in Blue and a Boy in Gray I think the time has come when the truth, and the whole truth at that, can be told, and when it will do positive good. Since the Span ish-american War, when some of the gallant Southern ofiicers and men made such records for themselves under Old Glory, the old lines have been practically wiped out. The recon structed South is as firm a part of our Nation as was the old South during the first half of the last century, and it has a perfect right to honor the memories of those who, while wear ing the gray and marching under the stars and bars, fought so gallantly for what they consid ered was right and true. Excerpt from Story of the American Flag: With Patriotic Selections and Incidents To the loyal American citizen, wandering in a foreign land no sight is more welcome or more heart-stirring, than the sight of the dear old Stars and Stripes. With what courage and self-devotion does the soldier follow the beloved flag amidst the smoke and carnage of battle, shedding his blood freely to maintain its honor, dying, it may be, in its defense. To every true heart, the flag is not merely a piece of bunting, backed by the power and authority of Government, to enforce its recognition, nor is it merely the emblem of his land, or the insignia of the Nation, but it is the embodiment of a principle, the symbol of those sacred truths handed down to us by the Past as a precious inheritance, and which, if we are not traitors to the trust. Will be as sacredly transmitted by us to the future. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Little Book, of the Flag Nearly thirty years. After the voyage of Henry Hudson, a company of Swedes made a settlement on the Delaware River. This had been planned by the great Gustavus Adolphus, King of Sweden. That colony will be the jewel of my kingdom, he said; but the Lion of the North was Slain in battle, and his twelve-year-old daughter Chris tina had become queen. That is why the loyal Swedes named their little fortification Fort Christiana, and over it they raised the flag of their country, a blue banner with a yellow cross.
