DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis study investigates the academic use of social media websites (SMS) by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers and students in Saudi Arabia. The goal is to examine the type of communication that occurs between teachers and students, the purpose of teachers' academic use of social media, the academic benefits of social media, the challenges academic social media pose, and the opinions of teachers and students regarding academic use of social media. Two questionnaires were developed for the purpose of this study and posted online: one for teachers and one for students. The questionnaires were designed to investigate teachers' and students' academic use of social media and their opinions on the academic use of social media. The results of the study show major differences in use and perception exist between students and teachers. Students demonstrate a more open and accepting attitude towards the academic use of social media than teachers, who hesitate to use social media for academic purposes. They instead prefer to employ formal traditional methods of communications, which they believe to be a more professional way to communicate. In general, teachers and students do not share the same views about social media use in academia.
