Tales, stories, fables and stories for children, collection in Spanish illustrated in full color. Tales: Children's tales are short stories that include imaginative characters, exciting adventures and moral lessons or educational messages, to entertain children, stimulate their imagination, teach them about values such as friendship, courage or the importance of being kind, and often end with happy endings. Stories: Children's stories can be longer stories than fairy tales, with more elaborate plots and more developed characters. These stories can address a variety of themes, from fantasy and adventure to everyday life, allowing children to immerse themselves in different worlds and situations, fostering their curiosity and understanding of the world around them. Fables: Children's fables are short stories featuring anthropomorphic animals (animals that act and speak like humans) or elements of nature that convey a clear moral lesson. Often, these stories present a situation or conflict that illustrates a value or teaching, and at the end provide an explicit moral for children to reflect on concepts such as honesty, humility, perseverance, or cunning. Stories: A story is the narration of a fact, real or imaginary, that is done through oral or written language. In other words, a story is an account, usually brief, of a series of events that occurred in reality or in the imagination. This guidebook to the Bright-Shadow World develops three closely related issues. The first is the position that fairytales and folktales are of value today because they encourage the growth of capabilities important in our postmodern world. Each of us, like the fairytale hero, sets out on his/her own quests, seeks his/her own identity, faces his/her own dilemmas with few resources but wit, imagination, and a certain power of improvisation. King develops the implications of this situation for such common fairytale problems as learning to read the world productively; navigating various kinds of "edges;" exploiting power sources; developing highly personal moral commitments; problem solving; and data collecting. The second concern of this book is with the development of a system for analyzing narrative structure. The formula offered here involves an examination of interactions among actors, physical settings, lines of force, and power sources as a narrative moves toward its denouement. This system facilitates the classifying, and contrasting of narratives, and illuminates the structure of both narrative and lived experience. Finally, this book is concerned with myth-making or world-making processes. It is shown that traditional narrative actually points to and delineates another dimension of existence (here called "the Bright-Shadow World") that operates by rules of its own and may be penetrated by individuals from our ordinary world. Inferences about the Bright-Shadow World drawn from traditional narrative are described and evaluated.

This one-stop cross-cultural selective guide to recent retellings of myths and hero tales for children and young adults will enable teachers and library media specialists to select comparative myths and tales from various, mostly non-European cultures. The focus is on stories from Native America, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Central and South America, and Oceania. The Guide contains extensively annotated entries on 189 books of retellings of myths and hero tales, both ancient and modern, from around the world published between 1985 and 1996. Represented are 1,455 stories suitable for use with young people from mid-elementary through high school. The entries, arranged alphabetically by writer, contain complete bibliographic data, age and grade levels, and evaluative annotations. Seven indexes—title, author, illustrator, culture, story type, name, and grade level—make searching easy. The story type index will enable teachers to select comparative myths and tales from different cultures on more than 50 types of myths and hero tales. Among the many myth types cited are origin of human beings and the world, comparative social customs and rituals, natural and heavenly phenomena, animal appearance and behavior, searches and quests, and tricksters. Among the hero tale types are fools and buffoons, kings and queens, warriors, monster slayers, important female figures, magicians, voyagers and adventurers, and spiritual leaders. The Guide concludes with a bibliography of retellings published earlier that have come to be considered standard works.
