Now there are three distinct Reader's Notebooks to help students grades K through 8 become better readers through writing. New! Reader's Notebook: Primary (recommended for Grades K-2) Reader's Notebook (recommended for Grades 2-4) Reader's Notebook: Advanced (recommended for Grades 4-8) Here's an engaging way for primary grade (K-2) students to respond to reading-through thinking, talking, drawing, and writing. Fountas & Pinnell Reader's Notebook: Primary is an 8 1/2 x11 spiral notebook organized into three color-coded tabbed sections: All About Me, Books I Read, and Letters and Words. It is specifically designed for younger children who may not yet be writing, with ample space to respond through both drawing and writing, with room for teacher support. All About Me recognizes the younger child's interest in their own developing identities-as individuals and as readers-with space for them to draw and write about themselves, their friends and family, and the books and authors they love. Books I Read outlines the steps for Readers' Workshop in a simple format that includes illustrations that support the print, and provides space for children to record the titles and authors of books they have read, along with space to draw and write about those books. The helpful Letters and Words section provides children with an alphabet chart, high-frequency words, a chart for children to record words as they encounter them, and an Alphabet Linking Chart. Reader's Notebook: Primary promotes reflection and dialogue about reading and is an excellent assessment tool for documenting reading achievement over time in a readers' workshop that includes independent reading, guided reading, and literature study (book clubs). Used throughout the academic year, the notebook serves as a continual record of one reader's book list, interests, and reading responses. The Reader's Notebook: Primary is also available in 5-packs.

From an American perspective, the Abraham Lincoln Brigade is arguably the most famous group of soldiers to fight in the Spanish Civil War. Hollywood screenwriter Alvah Bessie (who was later blacklisted as part of the Hollywood Ten) was a foot soldier with the Brigade and kept a riveting handwritten diary of his activities in four pocket notebooks. Carefully transcribed for the first time, these journals begin with his arrival in Spain in January of 1938, then depict his training, battlefield experiences, work on the battalion newspaper, and departure almost a year later. This never before published raw material formed the basis of Bessie's classic 1939 book Men in Battle, but in several ways these journals are even more vivid than that memoir. Bessie's notebooks reflect the fast pace of a soldier's life as he jots down impressions, often while under fire. He and his comrades stumble into a fascist camp and must flee for their lives. They endure the shelling and bombing from the forces commanded by General Francisco Franco. Ernest Hemingway visits to provide moral support and cigarettes. The squad must lead Spanish recruits as young as fifteen into a sea of deadly fire. Bessie learns that his best friend has been killed. Not simply a combat record, the notebooks also record songs the soldiers sang, diagrams of loyalist and fascist positions and combat formations, arguments among the men about politics and the conduct of the war, opinions of their officers, and the desire of many to go home. Alvah Bessie's Spanish Civil War Notebooks lend a fresh perspective to one of the most important conflicts of the 1930s and to a historically crucial opening chapter of World War II.

Using a wealth of varied sources, this book is an inspiring and essential gateway to understanding the foundations of modern Spain. Francisco J. Romero Salvadó employs a chronological framework to chart the country's experience, commencing with the Restoration of the Bourbon Monarch in 1874 up to the present day. Modern Spain is a vital contribution to the study and debate of this country's history and politics. It provides a thorough, yet concise, study of nearly 150 years of tumultuous historical evolution. It examines the crisis of traditional liberal politics and the subsequent ill-fated attempts at reform through the military dictatorship headed by General Miguel Primo de Rivera and the progressive Second Republic that ensued. The outcome being three years of tragic civil war, followed by the long 40-year dictatorship of General Francisco Franco. It concludes by exploring Spain's successful and surprisingly rapid transition to democracy and the challenges that it now faces in the 21st century. Romero Salvadó uproots the many myths and blatant distortions that have often surrounded the history of Spain. By offering an analysis within a European context, he also challenges the traditional view of the exceptional character of the country, encapsulated in the motto 'Spain is different!' On the contrary, this book so convincingly contends, Spain is a perfect example to show the troubled and often violent path to modernity that western societies had to undergo in their transition from elite to mass politics.

The tragedy that devastated Spain for 33 months from July 1936 to April 1939, was, first and foremost, a brutal fratricidal conflict, the product of the fatal clash between diametrically opposed views of Spain and an attempt to settle crucial issues which had divided Spaniards for generations: agrarian reform, recognition of the identity of the historical regions (Catalonia, the Basque Country), and the roles of the Catholic Church and the armed forces in a modern state. Being a war between Spaniards, it was particularly brutal, but it was also part of the broader move toward war in Europe and thus sucked in many “volunteers” from abroad. And it left a deep imprint since General Francisco Franco remained at the helm of the country until his death in 1975. The Historical Dictionary of the Spanish Civil war covers the history of the war, first through a long chronology, which highlights the major steps from the incubation to the conclusion. The overall situation is summed up in the introduction. Then the dictionary section fleshes it out, with over 600 entries on persons, places, events, institutions, battles, and campaigns. More reading can be found in an extensive bibliography. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about the Spanish Civil War.
