This book presents up-to-date research developments and novel methodologies regarding recursive filtering for 2-D shift-varying systems with various communication constraints. It investigates recursive filter/estimator design and performance analysis by a combination of intensive stochastic analysis, recursive Riccati-like equations, variance-constrained approach, and mathematical induction. Each chapter considers dynamics of the system, subtle design of filter gains, and effects of the communication constraints on filtering performance. Effectiveness of the derived theories and applicability of the developed filtering strategies are illustrated via simulation examples and practical insight. Features:- Covers recent advances of recursive filtering for 2-D shift-varying systems subjected to communication constraints from the engineering perspective. Includes the recursive filter design, resilience operation and performance analysis for the considered 2-D shift-varying systems. Captures the essence of the design for 2-D recursive filters. Develops a series of latest results about the robust Kalman filtering and protocol-based filtering. Analyzes recursive filter design and filtering performance for the considered systems. This book aims at graduate students and researchers in mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, communications networks, applied mathematics, robotics and control systems.

Different kinds of two-dimensional recursive filters are used in signal processing and pro-imagining processing process and communication systems where flexible frequency responses of the digital filters are necessitated. The focal intention of this thesis has been to propose a technique of designing different kinds of 2-D recursive filters with adaptable properties. From the 2-variable existing VSHP (Very Strictly Hurwitz Polynomial), a 2-D digital transfer function has been obtained through the application of the double generalized bilinear transformations with some changeable coefficients. 2-D LPF and 2-D HPF are designed from this 2-D transfer function, and the frequency response of either of them changes when one or more of these coefficients change. Other two important types of 2-D digital filters, 2-D band-pass filters and 2-D band-elimination filters could also be achieved by combining a 2-D LPF and a 2-D HPF. One of them, 2-D band-pass recursive filter has been designed in this thesis work. The manner how each coefficient of the designed filters affects the frequency response is analyzed in detail with simulation results--3-D amplitude plots and 2-D contour plots. We also derived required constrains for each case to obtain a stable response.

Two-dimensional recursive digital filters are widely used in signal processing and image processing, as well as divers communication systems. The main objective of this thesis has been to propose a new technique of designing 2-D recursive digital filters from an analog Bridged-T network. Starting from transfer function of a Bridged-T network in the analog domain which is VSHP, 2-D recursive digital filters can be obtained through the application of the double generalized bilinear transformations with the coefficients in their specified ranges. The impedance values of the transfer function of the Bridged-T network are obtained with compare to the fourth order Butterworth polynomial. For different impedance values of the Bridged-T network we get different types of filter output--all pass filter, band pass filter, band stop filter and low pass filter. The manner how each coefficient of generalized bilinear transformation affects each kind of 2-D recursive digital filter is investigated in details.

This book has been conceived to extend the generally published work on one- and two-dimensional digital filters in order to include some of the more recently developed ideas. It is intended to supplement and build on the classical books which cover the fundamental concepts of the topic. As a consequence of this, the basic theory is stated in a compact manner and is not developed thoroughly, as this would result in considerable duplication of existing books. The main theme of the book has been to provide a comprehensive background to the methods available for the realization of both recursive and nonrecursive digital filters, and to give an insight into some of the more recent implementation procedures. The book is planned to cover one- and two-dimensional systems in parallel, showing the techniques which are applicable in both areas, and also the limitations and constraints necessary when a one-dimensional technique is extended to systems of higher dimensionality. The theme of the book commences with several chapters on the design of filter transfer functions to meet given specifications. This is followed by a discussion of methods of implementing these in a practical system and the limitations imposed as a result of noise and finite word length. Finally, a discussion of some applications is included.

This report outlines the research progress during the period August 1978 to July 1979. This work can be divided into seven basic project areas. Project 1 deals with a comparative study of 2-D recursive and nonrecursive digital filters. The second project addresses a new design technique for 2-D half-plane recursive filters, and Projects 3 thru 5 deal with implementation issues. The sixth project presents our recent study of the applicability of array processors to 2-D digital signal processing. The final project involves our investigation into techniques for incorporating symmetry constraints on 2-D recursive filters in order to yield more efficient implementations.
