Excerpt from Principles Governing the Choice, Operation and Care of Small Irrigation Pumping Plants Pumps located above the source of water supply must be capable of 'drawing' the water to them when they are started empty, or if incapable of so doing, both the pumps and the suction lines must be filled with water previous to starting; that is, they must. Be primed. This is accomplished by the use of a. Hand pitcher-pump or equivalent power-driven unit, connected to the highest point of the pump case, by means of which the air is withdrawn from the pump and suction pipe. The discharge valve being closed during this Operation, the water rises from below and replaces the air as the latter is withdrawn. Or, the priming may be accomplished by filling the pump and suction pipe with water from some available supply, a flap valve being located at the bottom of the suction pipe to prevent the loss of the priming water. When the first method is used, the discharge valve is opened automatically or by hand as soon as the pump is started. If the second is used, the flap valve, or foot valve, opens automatically as soon as the pressure of water above is relieved. Excerpt from Irrigation in the North Atlantic States Sir: I have the honor to transmit herewith a report on Irrigation in the North Atlantic States, by Aug. J. Bowie, r., of the Irrigation and Drainage Investigations of this Office. This report shows that for market gardens and for meadows irrigation in humid sections has proven profitable, but it has not yet been practiced in the raising of general farm crops. The cost of securing water supplies in the East far exceeds that in the arid regions, although water is much more plentiful. This suggests that it may be possible to so reduce the cost of water as to render irrigation profitable for many crops which will not repay the expense now incurred. The descriptions of irrigation practice contained in this report should be suggestive to many who are now raising truck without the aid of irrigation, and it is therefore rec ommended that the report be published as a bulletin of this Office. Excerpt from Cost of Pumping From Wells for the Irrigation of Rice in Louisiana and Arkansas In part to avoid the provisions of these contracts and have an independent supply and in part to cover lands not reached by the large canals, many growers have put down wells and installed their own pumping machinery. For several years the author has been making pump tests in the rice districts, the results of which have been published in previous reports, but with few exceptions the plants tested have been the large ones taking water from streams and bayous; that is, those furnishing water to planters under con tracts such as described above. During the season of 1907, however, the small pumping plants lifting water from wells for the use of the owners received special attention. This was done for the purpose of determining the cost of water supplied in this way and in general the efficiency Of the methods and machinery used.
