I have since learned that 'it is probably not best to do so in such cases But without dwelling on the therapeutic aspect of such in stances, as later investigation may prove to be advisable or not, I can only allude to my opinion to Show how I felt about the phenomena and that I saw no interest for supernormal psychology in the case, at least in so far as evidence and corroboration could show. These left me without any other interest or importance in the phenomena than the usual place of them. In abnormal psychology. I could only counsel the man to go back to his trade of goldsmith and to try to overcome the impulse to do what seemed to me impossible of success. Excerpt from Proceedings of the American Society for Psychical Research, 1907, Vol. 1: Section "B" Of the American Institute for Scientific Research; Parts I-III Consequently I drew up a charter after the model of the Carnegie Institution and with several friends had the American Institute for Scientific Research incorporated. It was signed on June 29th, 1904, and immediately afterward sent to Albany, N. Y., for the action of the State authorities. The charter was granted a few weeks afterward. The names of the incorporators were Mr. Charles N. Jones, of New York; Mr. William S. Crandall, of New York; Mr. Miles Menander Dawson, of New York; Mr. Charles L. Bogle, of New York; and Mr. James H. Hyslop, of New York. Nothing more could be done at that time and the work of interesting the public in the plans of the Institute was post poned until the next fall. In the meantime I spent the summer in correspondence regarding the plan and made it known to various interested parties. It was deemed necessary, however, to take some more practical measures for reaching the public in regard to the whole matter.
