DOWNLOAD EBOOKThrough its practice of healing down the ages the Church has been able to inculturate the Christian message, but not without the risks of the manipulation' of the divine power which have gone with these practices. Throughout its long history anointing of the sick has almost constantly oscillated between physical and spiritual effects. This book critically examines the manifold practices of healing which flourish today in our midst especially in Nigeria. It emphasizes the teaching of the Church on healing and the healing power of the sacraments and proposes the inculturation of the ritual of anointing the sick that will be truly Christian and authentically African. Austin Echema is a priest of the Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri (Nigeria). He studied philosophy and theology in Bigard Memorial Seminary Ikot Ekpene (now St. Joseph's) and Enugu respectively and obtained his doctorate in theology from the Hochschule Sankt Georgen, Frankfurt/Main (Germany). He teaches liturgy at the Catholic Institute of West Africa, Port Harcourt (Nigeria) and is a visiting lecturer at the Seat of Wisdom Major Seminary Owerri (Nigeria).

DOWNLOAD EBOOKTraditional marriage and Christian marriage rites presently exist as two distinct ceremonies in some parts of Africa. Is there no way of bringing the two together to avoid any form of duplication or multiplication of rite? More so because the Church has always implicitly recognised matrimonial institution as a cultural product. The answer to the above question is located in the whole issue of inculturation. A process that successfully flourished in the Western civilisation and consequently influenced the teaching of the Church on marriage. The answer to our question seeks to establish a marriage rite where couples will genuinely experience the happy marriage between culture and Church. A marriage rite that will fulfil both the traditional and Christian demands.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKA close examination of African cyclic symbols, spatial categories, architecture, visual art and ritual life reveals the cosmo-biological bond connecting all of God's creation. Life is a gift of God, and everyone has the obligation to preserve and prolong it. The way to social harmony lies in going back to our cultural heritage and our past - African communalism, a system built on equity, respect for human rights and the rule of law. Any society - Church or State - that nurtures structural injustice deliberately, keeps the majority in abject poverty and installs mental and physical slavery eventually only prepares a pepper-soup for social violence and internecine civil war. In the words of John F. Kennedy "Those who make dialogue impossible, make violence inevitable."

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis continuation, on a higher level of an earlier work by the author, is an exploration of African cultural heritage; as such it is a journey to the source and fountain of African cultural values. It shows the existence of an African pre-colonial democratic and republican structure of government that is ordered, achievement-oriented, patriotic, and altruistic. Simeon Onyewueke Eboh lectures at the Catholic Institute of West Africa (CIWA), Port Harcourt, Nigeria, in the Department of Canonical Law, specializing in the philosophy of law and public ecclesistical law.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKFor not integrating initially some of the good elements in Igbo culture, many Igbo Christians have double personality - Christian personality and traditional personality. They are Christians on Sundays but traditionalists on weekdays. To combat such an anomalous situation, in imitation of Christ's effort at completing what was lacking in the Jewish religion, author Edwin Udoye proposes radical inculturation. His book equally contains many serious theological reflections such that it recommends itself to both theologians and the scholars researching on the religions of the world. Udoye has therefore made a very significant contribution worthy of commendation to both theological and religious studies.
