Since 1995, the noncontact atomic force microscope (NC-AFM) has achieved remarkable progress. Based on nanomechanical methods, the NC-AFM detects the weak attractive force between the tip of a cantilever and a sample surface. This method has the following characteristics: it has true atomic resolution; it can measure atomic force interactions, i.e. it can be used in so-called atomic force spectroscopy (AFS); it can also be used to study insulators; and it can measure mechanical responses such as elastic deformation. This is the first book that deals with all of the emerging NC-AFM issues.

Presents 30 of the 62 papers delivered at an August 1998 international symposium in Boston on the tribology of polymeric materials at both the macroscopic and microscopic scales. They look at some problems that have arisen as the equipment and experimental techniques for microscopic analysis have outdistanced the ability of scientists to model and interpret the results. The overall themes are contact mechanics of polymeric materials, micromechanics and microtribology, surface microstructures of various polymers, and industrial applications. Among the specific topics are the role of interfacial slippage in adhesive release, the experimental study of the friction regimes on viscoelastic materials, sparse coatings by the disperse adsorption of cylindrical brushes, and the effect of surface texture on the friction of automotive interior plastics. An up-to-date and comprehensive overview summarizing recent achievements, the state of the art, and trends in research into nanocellulose and cellulose nanocomposites. Following an introduction, this ready references discusses the characterization as well surface modification of cellulose nanocomposites before going into details of the manufacturing and the self-assembly of such compounds. After a description of various alternatives, including thermoplastic, thermosetting, rubber, and fully green cellulose nanocomposites, the book continues with their mechanic and thermal properties, as well as crystallization and rheology behavior. A summary of spectroscopic and water sorption properties precedes a look at environmental health and safety of these nanocomposites. With its coverage of a wide variety of materials, important characterization tools and resulting applications, this is an essential reference for beginners as well as experienced researchers.

Continuous Multivariate Distributions, Volume 1, Second Edition provides a remarkably comprehensive, self-contained resource for this critical statistical area. It covers all significant advances that have occurred in the field over the past quarter century in the theory, methodology, inferential procedures, computational and simulational aspects, and applications of continuous multivariate distributions. In-depth coverage includes MV systems of distributions, MV normal, MV exponential, MV extreme value, MV beta, MV gamma, MV logistic, MV Liouville, and MV Pareto distributions, as well as MV natural exponential families, which have grown immensely since the 1970s. Each distribution is presented in its own chapter along with descriptions of real-world applications gleaned from the current literature on continuous multivariate distributions and their applications.

Over the nearly 20 years of Kelvin probe force microscopy, an increasing interest in the technique and its applications has developed. This book gives a concise introduction into the method and describes various experimental techniques. Surface potential studies on semiconductor materials, nanostructures and devices are described, as well as application to molecular and organic materials. The current state of surface potential at the atomic scale is also considered. This book presents an excellent introduction for the newcomer to this field, as much as a valuable resource for the expert.
