When I began working on this story I had a specific goal in mind-I wanted to give my grandchildren some sense of the kind of person my father was. He was encouraging, he was knowledgeable, he was helpful and he was a good listener. He was such a big influence on me but he did not live long enough to ever see my grandchildren. I was afraid the only thing they would ever know of him was a name on a marker in a cemetery so I thought I should put together some of my memories of Lee Williams. Alas, as I organized my ideas I ran into a problem. I couldn't write about Dad and my teen-age years without telling of my teen-age romances. I didn't want to hurt anybody's feelings so I had to alter some stories and craft new ones. And once the stories became fiction this story literally began to re-write the past. When the world of fantasy is found to be so much more pleasurable than the real world what is wrong with enjoying our dreams for a little while?

A little boy spends the weekend at his dad’s new apartment in this picture book about how things change when parents separate — and the important things that stay the same. “This home is home because my dad is here, and it’s nothing like home because my mom isn’t here,” thinks the boy in this story when he enters his dad’s new apartment for the first time. His dad moved out on Monday and now it’s Friday night, the start of his weekend with his dad. The boy and his dad follow their normal weekend routine — they eat eggs for breakfast, play cards and spend time at the park. And then they do the same things on Sunday. It is hard to say goodbye at the end of the weekend, but Dad gives his son a letter to remind him that, even if they can’t always be together, the boy is loved. Naseem Hrab has written a poignant yet hopeful story, strikingly illustrated in Frank Viva’s signature style, about what happens when parents separate, and the new reality of having two homes. Popular American films are replete with story lines which involve the father-son relationship, often as the pivotal conflict or dragon which a hero must overcome to achieve success. Sometimes these conflicts are straightforward; other times they are projections of the central character's unconscious becoming conscious--in essence a modern form of myth. These American "filmmyths" serve as a visual means to project the psyche in an entertaining and easily accessible manner. Focusing on mythic structure, this volume explores 12 popular movies that deal with various aspects of the father-son relationship including the process of becoming a father, absent fathers, the rite of passage, and the turmoil between fathers and adolescents. Films examined include The Wizard of Oz, Back to the Future, Stand By Me, Red River, City Slickers, North by Northwest, E.T. the Extraterrestrial, Field of Dreams, Lone Star, The Lion King, Jurassic Park and The Searchers.
