Excerpt from Miscellanies Upon Various Subjects John Aubrey, the subject of this brief notice, was born at Easton Pierse, (Parish of Kington, ) in Wiltshire, on the 12th of March, 1626; and not on the 3rd of November in that year, as stated by some of his biographers. He was the eldest son of Richard Aubrey, Esq. of Burleton, Herefordshire, and Broad Chalk, Wiltshire. Being, according to his own statement, "very weak, and like to dye," he was baptized on the day of his birth, as appears by the Register of Kington. At an early age (1633) he was sent to the Grammar School at Yatton Keynei, and in the following year he was placed under the tuition of Mr. Robert Latimer, the preceptor of Hobbes, a man then far advanced in years. On the 2nd of May, 1642, being then sixteen years of age, Aubrey was entered a gentleman commoner of Trinity College, Oxford, where he appears to have applied himself closely to study. Excerpt from Miscellanies in Prose and Verse Gentle reader (readers are always gentle), should you read this preface before reading the whole or a part of the contents of this book, it may give you some idea what you may expect. I, the writer, have principally touched upon scenes, objects, and subjects belonging this sublunary world, holding the conservative notion that it is best for a man to keep within his own sphere. I have ventured in one lofty flight to touch on those luminaries, the sun, moon, and stars, but not so as to affect their evolutionary motions, or throw any new light on them. The deepest subject that I have tried to fathom is coal, a subject that might give much light if properly handled, though some consider it a miner question that may be easily settled. As I have not been a student in any department of science or learning, I do not presume to teach, therefore there will be found in this volume little that is instructive. To some. And in making the/e comparifons here and there I found fometimes an error of 2 minutes or more, and feveral not much floort of 2 minutes For example, Dec. Gtft, 1725, the error is 7an. Gift, 1726, the error is +2' find Apr. 15th, 1728, the error is 2' 3 So that it may he truly faid, that no Tables extant can he depended upon to give the Moon's place true to two minutes contrary to the confident ajertzons of our lzt tle A, B, C, Critic, who has heenfo hot upon the matter.
