Methods for the Oxidation of Organic Compounds: Alkanes, Alkenes, Alkynes, and Arenes is an account of the different methods used for the controlled oxidation of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, and arenes. Most of the oxidative techniques considered are illustrated with detailed experimental procedures taken from the literature. This book is comprised of five chapters and begins with a discussion on alkanes, alkyl groups, and hydrocarbon residues. The formation of alkenes, alcohols, hydroperoxides, dialkyl peroxides, cyclic peroxides, ethers, and esters as well as aldehydes, ketones, and carboxylic acids is described, together with the aromatization of cyclic systems. The following chapters are devoted to alkenes, alkynes, and arenes and focus on the formation of compounds ranging from 1,2-diols and oxiranes (1,2-epoxides) to 1,2-dicarbonyl compounds, phenols and their derivatives, and quinones. The formation of dialkynes by oxidative coupling of 1-alkynes is described, along with the oxidative cleavage of arenes and oxidative coupling of phenols. This monograph should be of interest to organic chemists and research students.

Automated Stream Analysis for Process Control, Volume 1 provides information pertinent to stream analyzers and its elements, including the system, construction, control, and operation. This book examines the results of the analysis, which must be used properly by the computer in order to regulate the process controls so that the process stream will obtain its ultimate goal. Organized into 12 chapters, this volume starts with an overview of the uses of liquid flow-injection analytical devices in process control applications within the chemical production plant. This text then examines the initial two techniques, namely, ion chromatography and ion exclusion chromatography that are used to analyze over 90 varieties of ions down to part-per-billion in aqueous streams in laboratory applications in academic, government, and industrial laboratories. Other chapters consider monitoring of gas streams generated from process development units. Chemists, chemical engineers, analytical chemists, as well as laboratory and plant managers will find this book extremely useful.

Ozonation in Organic chemistry, Volume I: Olefinic Compounds covers the historical background of ozone reactions with organic substances and the mechanisms of these reactions. Composed of 12 chapters, this book first deals with the development of the available theory of all ozone reactions, such as the Harries and Staudinger theories, particularly the Criegee mechanism of ozonolysis. This text then describes the step-by-step mechanism of the classical ozonolysis reaction of olefins and how it evolved. Considerable chapters are devoted to the reactions that compete with ozonolysis, such as epoxidation and other partial cleavage reactions. Both liquid- and gas-phase ozone reactions are explored in other chapters. This volume will appeal to those who are interested in exploring the frontiers of ozone-organic chemistry.

Provides a comprehensive, balanced introduction to this multi-disciplinary area of chemistry. Intended not only for chemists, but also for environmental and other science students, this text carefully introduces the chemistry needed to fully appreciate this subject, placing it in an applied and practical setting. Written in an accessible and readable style, the book assumes only a basic knowledge of chemistry, with the more advanced chemical concepts carefully introduced as needed. Opening with a general introduction to the subject and the practical skills that need to be known, the text then moves on to cover areas of specific interest to environmental chemists. Each chapter starts by covering the theory and concepts, and then describes a selection of experiments that can be undertaken. * Provides a comprehensive introduction to environmental chemistry covering all the key areas * Includes a balanced coverage of both theoretical and experimental aspects * Maintains a careful and logically-structured approach, with theory being covered first, followed by laboratory experiments and student problems * Assumes only a basic knowledge of chemistry, with more advanced concepts introduced as needed This book will be invaluable to students in the chemical and environmental sciences, as well as engineering, physical, life and earth science students interested in environmental chemistry.

The term "alkali soil"is employed to refer to soils that have a high exchangeable-sodium-percentage; and "saline soil" is used in connection with soils having a high value for the electrical conductivity of the saturation extract. This handbook was first issued in multilithed form in 1947, and it has been widely distributed in this country and abroad. The handbook is intended primarily as a practical guide for those who are confroted with soil, plant, and water problems involving salinity and alkali The first five chapters provide a basis for the evaluation and interpretaion of measure-ments The procedures and measuring methods given in chapters 6,7, and 8 are those with which the Laboratory has had experience, and they are believed to have general applicability in the diagnosis and improvement of saline and alkali soils. This handbook is the result of the combined efforts of the entire staff of the salinity Laboratry.
