Leur utilisation restreinte en hydrodynamique navale malgré leur convergence rapide et leur précision, est d'abord passée en revue. Puis, on caractérise les techniques spectrales tri-dimensionnelles développées : méthode directe et techniques High-Order Spectral, dont une nouvelle variante est proposée. Des cas tests d'oscillations libres et forcées de surface libre en cuve sont validés par confrontation à diverses méthodes. L'approche est ensuite étendue au moyen de stratégies de 'potentiel additionnel', et différents modèles sont développés et validés : pour la génération et la propagation de houle irrégulière non-linéaire par doublets tournants spécifiquement optimisés ; modèles novateurs spectral/BEM et spectral/visqueux pour la diffraction autour de corps ; bassin de houle numérique au second ordre reproduisant toutes les caractéristiques physiques du nouveau bassin de l'ECN.
