In making his choice, he has in mind three things: the results to be accomplished through the use of the tool, the characteristics of the material on which the tool is to be used, and his own peculiar requirements as the user of the tool. And he selects the tool that best combines the qualities demanded by these three considerations. So the carpenter selects his saw, the wood-chopper his ax, the blacksmith his hammer, even the ditch-digger his shovel and the bootblack his brush. Textbooks are tools. To be serviceable, they must be adapted, like other tools, to the three considerations: the end to be accomplished by their use, the material in connection with which they arc to be used, and the needs of the user.
