Politics, language, and culture are three of the most powerful forces affecting education today, yet they have been little discussed in relation to systemic school reform, the new status quo of urban schools. This book looks at their effects through the eyes of teachers, administrators, and insider/outsiders who are actually living reform at the school level in four widely different urban school systems: Chicago, San Francisco and Oakland, California, and Boston. The book also creates a statistical and conceptual picture of urban education and school reform as national phenomena with deep historical roots, and offers a composite case study of an urban elementary school undergoing reform. The author argues that urban school reform is failing becasue its basic strategy is misguided and because reform thinking has consciously ignored three essential sources of knowledge about school change. Strategically, efforts for reform have relied heavily on the widespread replication of nationally promoted exemplary programs. This approach assumes that local schools lack the knowledge and will to solve their own problems and require prescriptive intervention from national models. In fact, the exemplary programs approach has yielded very limited success. What is needed instead is the creation and long-term support of unique, local exemplary contexts that combine best-practice approaches with local knowledge, conditions, and resources.

"Becoming a Citizen is a terrific book. Important, innovative, well argued, theoretically significant, and empirically grounded. It will be the definitive work in the field for years to come."--Frank D. Bean, Co-Director, Center for Research on Immigration, Population and Public Policy "This book is in three ways innovative. First, it avoids the domestic navel-gazing of U.S .immigration studies, through an obvious yet ingenious comparison with Canada. Second, it shows that official multiculturalism and common citizenship may very well go together, revealing Canada, and not the United States, as leader in successful immigrant integration. Thirdly, the book provides a compelling picture of how the state matters in making immigrants citizens. An outstanding contribution to the migration and citizenship literature!"--Christian Joppke, American University of Paris

Sociologists in Action on Inequalities: Race, Class, Gender, and Sexuality, by Shelley K. White, Jonathan M. White, and Kathleen Korgen, is a brief anthology of original readings that are perfect for Race and Ethnicity; Race, Class, and Gender; Introduction to Sociology; Social Problems; Social Inequality; Senior Capstone and other courses taught through the central lens of diversity. Like its companion Sociologists in Action volume, on social change and social justice, this collection brings together dozens of accounts of sociologists who are using their sociology to make a positive impact on society. Each of the 30 selections describe, through firsthand experience, how sociology can be used to address enduring problems of prejudice and discrimination based on race, nationality, class, gender, and sexuality. Discussion questions and suggested readings and resources at the end of every chapter will provide students with opportunities to delve further into the topics covered and help create full and nuanced discussions, grounded in the "real world" work of public and applied sociologists.
