Excerpt from Manual of Hygiene for Schools and Colleges The want has long been felt of a work on Hygiene, which would occupy an intermediate place between the elementary text-books for the use of children, and the advanced treatises for practitioners of medicine, sanitary engineers, and other persons intending to become experts in Sanitary Science. This book is designed to meet, in some degree, that want. Whilst many of the calculations, and much of the matter, contained in it are expressed in terms not suited to a child, it is, on the other hand, free, as far as may be, from technical expressions not readily understood by the ordinary reader. Whilst it is primarily intended for teachers, and for pupils in attendance at the Normal and other Schools of the higher grade it is hoped that it may be read with interest and profit by other persons; and that a perusal of it, coupled with an earnest desire to put in practice any good suggestions that may be offered, will be productive of increased health and vigor, and a lessened death-rate. It is intended to present such a knowledge of sanitary matters as every intelligent citizen should possess. It will be found that the book is mainly devoted to considerations of those matters of Hygiene in regard to which a controlling or modifying influence may be exercised by those for whom it is intended. Such points in Physiology and Anatomy are taken up as will aid in the hygienic considerations referred to: it has been felt that people will be more likely to put in practice suggestions in Hygiene, for which they understand the physiological reasons, than they will mere dogmatic directions. Excerpt from Anatomy, Physiology, and Hygiene: A Manual for the Use of Colleges, Schools, and General Readers If the pupil is not obliged to memorize the contents of the book in detail, but merely to grasp the salient points of the text, and carefully to read the footnotes and appen dix in connection with it, he will not find it difficult to acquire knowledge which will be to him both a pleasure and a gain. The services of Professor Atwater, Dr. T. D. Crothers, Dr. Eliza Mosher, Dr. E. H. Bartley, Dr. T. R. French, Dr. A. Mathewson, Dr. R. L. Dickinson, Dr. J. Scott Wood, Dr. J. 0. Excerpt from Hygiene a Manual of Personal and Public Health The writing of a preface is perhaps superfluous for a book which has had a large and steady sale for nearly twenty years, and which has evidently met with the approval of a large constituency. A few words of introduction appear, however, desirable in view of the facts that the present edition has been almost entirely re-written; that a large amount of new matter has been introduced; and that, so far as is known, the comments on each subject represent the most recent and authoritative knowledge upon it. An attempt has been made to meet the requirements of medical students, as well as of science students and general readers, for whom former editions were chiefly intended. A large class of medical students and practitioners do not require the detailed statement of the subject contained in the larger text-books. For them, and, it is hoped, also for a large number of candidates for diplomas in public health and in sanitary science, the present edition will prove to be useful. At the same time, the subject has been treated as non-technically as is consistent with accuracy, in order to retain its suitability for non-medical readers. A large number of new illustrations have been introduced. The new chapters dealing with Dietetics, Trade Nuisances, Meteorological Observations, Tuberculosis, Disinfection, and Vital Statistics will, it is believed, enhance the value of the book. Attention is also drawn to the solutions of mathematical problems in the different branches of hygiene, of which a table of contents is given on page viii. Excerpt from The Laws of Health, and School Hygiene: A Hand-Book on School Hygiene Some may object that the sections dealing with anatomy and physiology are too short. This abbrevia tion is intentional. There are already excellent small manuals dealing with physiology suitable for the teacher's needs, and what is wanted is a book treating of the application of physiological knowledge to the hygiene of school life. The tendency in lectures on the laws of health is to overburden them with purely anatomical and physiological details, and so obscure their real pur pose and lessen their value. In the original preparation of my lectures, I gained many useful hints from the excellent articles on the teaching of hygiene to teachers, which appeared in the British Medical Journal during 1904 - 1905. Use has been made of them once more in preparing this manual. Most of the illustrations have been furnished by my publishers. For No. 16 I am indebted to Messrs. E. 85 S. Excerpt from A Manual of Hygiene It is believed, however, that much valuable time might be saved both to the lecturer and to the student by the use of a text-book embodying in concise form the fundamental principles of hygiene and preventive medicine, and that such time might be more profitably used for wider discussion of the subject in the lecture room, and practical demonstration and study in the laboratory and elsewhere of the problems involved. Excerpt from A Manual of Practical Hygiene for Students, Physicians, and Medical Officers Prior to his departure for England in 1908, where he died nu expectedly, Dr. Harrington had been preparing for a revision of his Hygiene, the demand for which he foresaw. He had then largely completed the chapters on Milk and Disinfection. His manuscript, as well as the remainder of the volume, have been brought to date by the present writer. Dr. Harrington's work had won its way to an enviable position in the literature of one Of the most important branches of human knowledge. No effort has been spared to main tain its usefulness as an authoritative guide for all classes of readers interested in hygiene and sanitation. Excerpt from A Manual of Hygiene and Sanitation The preceding paragraph indicates the individual or personal aspect that marked the common concept of the subject until a comparatively short time ago. More recently the tendency is also to view its func tions, opportunities and problems from a social and altruistic stand-point, and the field has so enlarged in this direction that it is questionable whether it may not be better to supplant the older word - Hygiene when used to refer to the general science, with the newer term - Public Health and Preventive Medicine. But, after all, he who works to improve the sanitary condition of his neighbors and his neighborhood, no matter how extensive these may be in numbers and area, at the same time well serves his own interests, for not only is disease no respecter of persons, but its transmission and dis semination depend very much upon one's relationships with others. Excerpt from A Manual of Practical Hygiene: Designed for Sanitary and Health Officers, Practitioners and Students of Medicine The chemical causes of disease have been, within the past few years, entirely restricted to the action of chemical bodies upon the organism; that is, bodies externally applied or introduced purely from without. It has, however, been shown that under varying conditions there may be developed within the organism toxic agents in many instances more poisonous than forms usually introduced from without. Excerpt from A Manual of Personal Hygiene It is stated with great emphasis that without doubt the actions and precautions which from moment to moment secure self-preservation are of primary im portance; and that, as vigorous health and its accompanying high spirits are larger elements of happiness than any other things whatsoever, the teaching how to maintain them is a teaching that should yield in moment to no other whatever.
