At its height in 1944, the Esterwegen concentration camp housed over two thousand political prisoners from occupied Europe. Among them was a small band of Belgian Freemasons who, by chance or providence, found themselves assigned to the same barrack. In the midst of these terrible conditions, they came together to form the secret Masonic Lodge Liberté chérie. Years of painstaking research and translation have yielded, for the first time, a comprehensive telling of these events for English readers. It is a story that transcends personal differences and the borders of Masonic jurisdiction. This camaraderie and compassion laid the foundation for the most important work in the history of the world's oldest Fraternity.
Franz était présent lors de l'allumage des feux de la respectable loge "Liberté Chérie", fondée dans un camp de concentration nazi, celui de Esterwegen, en Allemagne. Cette loge maçonnique, créée en novembre 1943 à l'intérieur même d'un "enfer sur terre", est un symbole fort pour la défense des droits de l'homme. Ses sept fondateurs, déportés pour des faits de résistance, étaient juge, pharmacien, avocat, médecin, professeur et journalistes et occupaient le baraquement "numéro 6". Franz a lui aussi partagé le sort de ces francs-maçons, prisonnier du 16 novembre 1943 au 15 avril 1944. Il est un des seuls à pouvoir nous en parler aujourd'hui. Ce présent ouvrage révèle un édifiant échange épistolaire et auto-biographique, entremêlant Histoire, réflexion et poésie. Franz, un vieil homme sage, lucide et franc-maçon, raconte les méandres accidentés d'une longue vie par le biais de lettres éclairantes. Catherine, une jeune franc-maçonne, avide d'espérances et d'avenir et qui tente cie répondre à bon nombre de ses interrogations, est la destinataire attentive de ses écrits. Il existait " loin vers l'infini " un camp de concentration près de la localité d'Esterwegen dans l'Emsland, au nord-ouest de l'Allemagne. Ce camp hébergea dès 1943 des prisonniers politiques belges, pour la plupart des résistants auxquels les Allemands imposèrent le statut de Nacht und Nebel (" Nuit et brouillard "), En ce camp, s'est déroulé un épisode unique dans l'Histoire : la fondation et le fonctionnement d'une loge maçonnique appelée " Liberté chérie ".
