Not illustrated. 1881 edition. Excerpt: ...to be the most affecting of his effusions. It is addressed to M. L'Abbe Thomas Caron, V.G. A mon filleul and A une enfant are poems to youth and incline towards a melancholy view of life rather disheartening to the young; but hope is strong in its spring-time and even the poet's forebodings and discouraging advice can not crush it out: " Enfant ne sonde pas les secrets de la vie; Helas! rests toujours enfantl" La dernie're lrryuoise is a tragedy in verse, harrowing and awe-inspiring. A squaw not satisfied with the murder of a pale-faced child, but, " Comme un vautour feroce, aux entrailles shttache, Lui decouvre le ooeur, de ses ongles Parrache, Et le devore tout sanglant! " The recall of these horrors is revolting, although too frequent in the past of this country, but more aesthetic subjects are preferred in the present age. Le lae de Beauport will revive many pleasant times and still dearer associations, never to be forgotten. Laforet Canadienne is a subject on which Mr. F rechette dwells eon amore, especially in the glorious autumn. The beauties of the woods at that season " are a joy forever;" he revels in expressive words and brilliant metaphors. Some of these descriptions are perfect gems, poetically apostrophizing charming localities, so numerous in Canada. There are several other choice pieces of the author not found in this volume. I miss especially La voix a"un Exile, in which are many passages that would vie with the best of Victor Hugo's; but, unfortunately it contains allusions of such bitter enmity to political antagonists as to detract from their poetic effect. Mr. Frechette's verse is chaste and highly finished;...

DOWNLOAD EBOOK"From Dorset sculpture to the Barenaked Ladies, award-winning historian Jonathan F. Vance reveals a storyteller's ear for narrative. In a country this diverse, 'culture' has different meanings. Vance tells a story from the wind-swept Arctic where a stranded Innu woman, fighting to survive, took the time to decorate her clothing with rich designs. A British explorer was amazed at her efforts, but Vance reminds us of the inseparable connection between life and art in Inuit culture (the Innu word for 'breathe' also means 'to make poetry,' and both derive from the word for 'the soul'). No surprise that Aboriginal culture began to change irrevocably with the arrival of more Europeans (who brought their own ideas about culture). But that is another tale in Vance's fascinating History.Vance considers a range of key topics. Where, for example, is the divide between 'culture' and mass entertainment? He also considers how the hot-button issues of Canadian culture-government funding for the arts, the cultural brain drain, the drive to preserve distinctly Canadian forms of expression, concerns over copyright protection, the economic impact of cultural industries-can be traced back to previous centuries. And he shines new light on other key areas, such as the unique culture of Quebec and the CBC."--Résumé de l'éditeur.
