Excerpt from Lectures on Cavalry I Have two lectures and one conference in which to discuss the employment or use of cavalry. There is a good deal on this subject scattered through the F.S.R., and certain paragraphs of the C.D.R. have been assigned for conference. But what is given in both F.S.R., and C.D.R. is in general so condensed that it does not clear up the situation much unless one has a good mental picture of the situations the authors had in view. I shall try to go more into detail, so that the application of the principles given in the C.D.R. and the F.S.R. may be more clear. The whole matter of the employment of cavalry is so little a matter of rule that it may be said there are no rules for it. In regard to some questions there are various opinions, and the details of how cavalry was handled in war to accomplish certain results are hard to obtain. But there are a number of general principles as to which there is very little question, though the methods of applying these principles may vary. More new ideas on the subject of the employment of cavalry were brought out and put into practice in our Civil War than in any war since, and, up to the present time, there is no better source of information as to how cavalry should be handled - also, from this same war numerous examples of how cavalry should never be used. Excerpt from Volunteer Cavalry: The Lessons of the Decade If certain remarks of mine may appear unduly severe on abuses in our Army, I think that the reader will find that it is only the abuses that are so handled. Excerpt from The British Army, 1783-1802: Four Lectures Delivered at the Staff College and Cavalry School The four lectures comprised within this volume have been printed at the request of some of the officers or the Staff College and Cavalry School, to whom they were delivered in November Though, from the nature of the subject, there is some repetition in the third and fourth lectures of matter brought forward in the two first, I have decided to print the whole of them as they stand. There may well be young officers who would find the lectures addressed to so critical an audience as the Staff College somewhat heavy, and yet be willing to accept a few fragments of them mingled with the information which appeals more directly to their interest. Excerpt from Cavalry Reconnaissance Tms work has been written with a View to assisting young cavalry oflicers to study the art of reconnaissance, and to instruct their men. A number of historical examples have been given in the introduction with the double object of bringing out the importance of information in war, and of providing a series of incidents from actual war which may be of use to make troop and squadron lectures more interesting. For the rest it has been sought to illustrate and amplify those excellent principles laid down in our regulations, and to bring forward certain details on which they are, for want of space, silent, and on which there are no guides for the young officer. Excerpt from Cavalry Versus Infantry Captain Maude is so well known to American military readers that no further introduction seems necessary. It is sufficient to say that the essays here presented were originally published in the Civil and Military Gazette, of Lahore, India. And that their military value and interest are such that they are deemed well worth preservation in book form. The views expressed by Captain Maude are original and fearless; and whether accepted in their entirety by the reader or not, they can not be perused without benefit by any thinking soldier.
