When my mother was first diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, everything seemed to be fine. Other than forgetting a few things here and there, her behavior appeared normal. But then I received a call from my sister telling me that when she got home, Mom had disappeared. She called the police and discovered that she had decided to take a late-night walk and was found three miles away from the house. It was then that we discovered she could no longer be left alone. Once people knew about my mother’s condition, they suggested different movies for me to watch. After seeing these movies, had I been a candidate for suicide, I would have jumped right off the cliff. Watching my mom go from a thriving adult to a helpless child was heartbreaking enough. After spending months crying about my mom’s condition, I had an epiphany. I could continue grieving over her, or I could look at the things that made me laugh about her instead of the things that made me cry. Looking at her disease from this perspective changed everything. Taking care of her was no longer a burden, but a joy. It was also a way for me to give back to someone who had spent their lifetime giving to me. This book is dedicated to caregivers everywhere. I hope it will inspire, encourage, and strengthen you as you take care of your loved ones. No matter what the disease, I hope your perspective will be to focus on the things that make you laugh instead of cry.

In this deeply moving chronicle of love and loss, cognitive psychologist Rick Gardner recounts his journey alongside his wife, Betty Ann, as she progresses through dementia and eventually Alzheimer's disease. Part love letter to his wife of 50 years, and part science narrative, Journey through Alzheimer's conveys in vivid detail Betty Ann's descent from her first understated symptoms to her subsequent cognitive decline. Gardner describes what happens in the brain when dementia occurs, including the deterioration of the five senses on cognitive functioning, and the effects aging plays in the process. The book is the only first-person account of decline of thinking and cognition into Alzheimer's written by a cognitive psychologist, and readers will appreciate the clarity of Gardner's insights, as well as his compassion and candor. This book will be especially helpful, as well as cathartic, to family and caregivers of those with Alzheimer's, although it is Gardner's tender portrayal of his commitment to the brilliant, vivacious Betty Ann that will remain with readers long after the final page is turned.

This is the first book to explore, through personal accounts and vignettes, the rare moments of humor that unexpectedly pop up during the caregiving of people suffering from Alzheimer''s and related dementia. Young brings the courageous experiences of care providers and relatives to life as they encounter the challenges of dealing with these seriously afflicted patients. At the same time she reveals the touching and gently humorous moments that go a long way to ease the tension and pain. While respectful of the plight of affected families and patients, Young gathers a timeless collection of "fear busters" that "access mirth" with touching chapters such as "Please Don''t Eat the Marigold," and "I''ve Just Found Out I''m in Baltimore." "By staring the Alzheimer''s monster down and even laughing a little in the face of it," Young says, "we bolster our courage and release the chemicals (endorphins) in ourselves to gain a sense of well-being in the face of adversity." A must for all caregivers and families, this is truly a book that, once started, cannot be put down.

Like many children of Alzheimer's sufferers, Lauren Kessler, an accomplished journalist, was devastated by the disease that seemed to erase her mother's identity even before claiming her life. But suppose people with Alzheimer's are not slates wiped blank. Suppose they experience friendship and loss, romance and jealousy, joy and sorrow? To better understand this debilitating condition, Kessler enlists as a bottom-of-the-rung caregiver at an Alzheimer's facility and learns lessons that challenge what we think we know about the disease.
