Excerpt from A Manual of Pathological Histology This title implies the necessity of paying little attention to naked-eye descriptions, which, indeed, are so complete and satisfactory in the classical works of Cruveilhier, Andral, Bouillaud, and others, that it is impossible to rival them or to successfully abridge them. The material which has been utilized for the composition of this manual is derived from autopsies and Operations in the hospitals of Paris, so rich in this respect that a tenth part of the material daily wasted there would amply suffice for the supply of the most active laboratory. And here we desire to express our acknowledgments to our colleagues, to our friends, and to our chiefs, physicians and surgeons of the hospitals, by whose earnest co-operation most interesting specimens have been placed at our disposal. The examination of this material was made by our pupils and by ourselves in our own special laboratory our manual being the pathological complement to the histological course which we have given for four years. Excerpt from A Laboratory Guide in Histology The purpose of this book is to furnish laboratory instructions adapted for use in any standard course of normal Histology. With the exception of gross anatomy, no laboratory subject today enjoys more uniformity of presentation than does Histology. In the study of the fundamental tissues greater flexibility of treatment exists than in the microscopic anatomy of organs, yet in both definite routine structures must be observed and their inter-relations and significance emphasized. For this reason it is hoped that a laboratory guide designed to accomplish these ends, without reference to the peculiarities of any particular course, may prove useful. For the most part, directions involving fresh tissues and organs, or specially stained and treated preparations, illustrative of uncommon features, have been omitted. This is done not with the intention of minimizing their importance, but because it is in these minutiae that courses vary most. An attempt has been made to put the treatment throughout on an inductive basis. Rather than presenting a mere list of structures to be identified, in so far as is practicable, the student is led to scrutinize, explain, and reach independent conclusions. The frequent interjection of appropriate queries should relieve the instructor of much tedious and often belated individual quizzing and directing. Excerpt from Pathological Technique: A Practical Manual for Workers in Pathological Histology The order and method of procedure in making a post mortem examination, including the various incisions, may be said to have been planned for the routine examination of normal or diffusely diseased organs. As soon as a notice able focal lesion is present the order of procedure and the customary method of removal and of incision must be so altered as best to display the lesion. Instruments - The following instruments will be found extremely useful in the autopsy-room, although not all of them are necessary: The autopsy-table should be large, so as to accommodate on it the instruments and several dishes in addition to the body. It should have a slightly raised edge, and should slope gently toward an Opening in the center for the escape of fluids. The table is best made of zinc, and along one edge should have a centimeter scale. The water for use on the table is best supplied by a rubber tube from an overhead pipe reaching to within 60 to 100 cm. Of the table. The scales for weighing the various organs should have a large pan and gram and kilogram weights. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Clinical Pathology This book represents an attempt to describe in a reasonable compass such laboratory investigations, whether chemical, histological or bacteriological, as have a practical bearing upon the diagnosis and treatment of disease; to give some account of their meaning, and to assess, so far as possible, their value in practice. Many of the smaller text-books of Clinical Pathology deal with the subject only in part; the complexity of methods in the larger works renders them more suitable to special investigators, and it was felt that a book of intermediate size might be of use to the student and practitioner. The reduction in size has been mainly arrived at by avoidance of a reduplication of methods, in preference to the omission of any essential branch of the subject. Where several methods for the same object are in use, one, or at most two, are described in full: the remainder are omitted altogether. Much of scientific interest has been necessarily sacrificed to the practical application of diagnostic methods, and the book has consequently no pretensions to consideration as anything more than an adjunct to clinical medicine. No list of references is given, and the names of authorities, unless definitely associated with a particular reaction, are for the most part omitted.
