The incidents which led up to, and those which immediately followed, the amalgamation of the engineering sectional societies are, however, set out in some detail, and the subsequent proceedings of the Amalgamated Society are briefly traced. Readers will find for themselves, without further guidance or preface, any morals or lessons which the records contain. It may add to the interest and the value of this volume, however, if it is here prefaced by a few words in regard to the origin of Trade Unionism itself.
