This book introduces the reader to the collecting activities of a late 19th-early 20th century Bostonian couple with a passion for ancient Egypt. The collectors, Laura and Kingsmill Marrs, were guided in their acquisitions by Howard Carter, an archaeologist who would later achieve world-wide recognition for his discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun (1922). The cultures of Nubia built the earliest cities, states, and empires of inner Africa, but they remain relatively poorly known outside their modern descendants and the community of archaeologists, historians, and art historians researching them.
