The BRICS countries are heralded for their double digit economic growth rates and while this has indeed been impressive, particularly in India and China, it is clear that significant social and environmental fault-lines have developed in these regions. Building on the integral heritage of Ronnie Lessem’s previous work through Trans4m’s Centre for Integral Development, here he makes the case for ’integral advantage’, a philosophy inclusive of nature and culture, technology and economy, altogether accommodated by an integral polity. Moreover, and as will be illustrated in each of the cases of the five BRICS countries, each one is an integral entity in its own particular right, and needs to be viewed, and duly evolved, as such. In the final analysis, he argues, then, that around the world, the failure of a society to develop is not due to its economic limitations, in isolation, but to the failure of nature and culture, technology and economy, to co-evolve in unison, under the rubric of an integral polity, altogether aligned with that particular society. Drawing on the approach he has developed towards the release of a society’s genius, in each case, he demonstrates how the pursuit of integral advantage may actually arise. Most specifically, he indicates how a balance between the spiritual and the material, on the one hand, and the natural and the social, on the other, needs to be achieved.

Advanced Concrete Technology A thorough grounding in the science of concrete combined with the latest developments in the rapidly evolving field of concrete technology In the newly revised second edition of Advanced Concrete Technology, a distinguished team of academics and engineers delivers a state-of-the-art exploration of modern and advanced concrete technologies developed during the last decade. The book combines the essential concepts and theory of concrete with practical examples of material design, composition, processing, characterization, properties, and performance. The authors explain, in detail, the hardware and software of concrete, and offer readers discussions of the most recent advances in concrete technology, including, but not limited to, concrete recycling, nanotechnology, microstructural simulation, additive manufacturing, and non-destructive testing methods. This newest edition of Advanced Concrete Technology provides a sustained emphasis on sustainable and novel technologies, like new binders, 3D printing, and other advanced materials and techniques. Readers will also find: A thorough introduction to concrete, including its definition and its historical evolution as a material used in engineering and construction In-depth explorations of the materials for making concrete and the properties of fresh concrete Comprehensive discussions of the material structure of concrete, hardened concrete, and advanced cementitious composites Fulsome treatments of concrete fracture mechanics, non-destructive testing in concrete engineering, and future trends in concrete Perfect for undergraduate and graduate students studying civil or materials engineering—especially those taking classes in the properties of concrete or concrete technologies—as well as engineers in the concrete industry. Advanced Concrete Technology, 2nd Edition will also earn a place in the libraries of civil and materials engineers working in the industry.

This volume in the Elsevier Series in Electromagnetism presents a detailed, in-depth and self-contained treatment of the Fast Multipole Method and its applications to the solution of the Helmholtz equation in three dimensions. The Fast Multipole Method was pioneered by Rokhlin and Greengard in 1987 and has enjoyed a dramatic development and recognition during the past two decades. This method has been described as one of the best 10 algorithms of the 20th century. Thus, it is becoming increasingly important to give a detailed exposition of the Fast Multipole Method that will be accessible to a broad audience of researchers. This is exactly what the authors of this book have accomplished. For this reason, it will be a valuable reference for a broad audience of engineers, physicists and applied mathematicians. - The Only book that provides comprehensive coverage of this topic in one location - Presents a review of the basic theory of expansions of the Helmholtz equation solutions - Comprehensive description of both mathematical and practical aspects of the fast multipole method and it's applications to issues described by the Helmholtz equation

Modern Applied Fracture Mechanics presents a practical, accessible guide to understanding and applying basic linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) techniques to problems commonly seen in industry, including fatigue analysis, failure analysis, and damage tolerance. Including applications for several software programs, AFGROW, MATLAB®, ABAQUS, and a web-based FM calculator, the book discusses appropriate models, assumptions, and typical input/output parameters. It provides a framework that will enable readers to quickly learn and use fracture mechanics (FM) software packages and/or write their own code to solve unique or standard FM problems. The book covers the fundamental concepts needed to successfully execute routine applications or conduct experimental investigations. End-of-chapter problems are included, along with real-world examples to enhance student understanding. The textbook is appropriate for undergraduate students, preparing them for the industry, and for advanced studies in fracture mechanics at the graduate level. Industry professionals and researchers will find this book a valuable resource for understanding basic fracture mechanics principles and methods. Features include: Provides broad, accessible coverage of common fracture mechanics concepts and applications. Focuses on applications, real-world examples, and numerical methods in fracture analysis. Integrates and explains current end-user software coverage for fracture mechanics. Includes numerous sample problems, software examples, and end-of-chapter problems. Includes a Solutions Manual for adopting instructors.
